Occupy The Planet

We are in the process of reinventing OccupyThePlanet.org to better represent environmental, green living, food, air, water issues and more, for a broadbase of Occupy groups to better coordinate and communicate. If you are interested in helping with that, or participating or both lol please hit us up on site or here, or on irc (TheBatman), or even email me @ batman(at)occupytheplanet.org.

First National Transportation Day of Action – Fruitvale, Oakland – Wednesday, April 4, 2012 – 4:30 PM

We, the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment’s Riders for Transit Justice (ACCE/RTJ), are calling for nationwide demonstrations on Wednesday, April 4th, 2012, to highlight the amount of money being given to banks to pay extraordinarily high interest rates on swap fees. This is in conjunction with Occupy MBTA/Boston and many other cities.

Fruitvale Transit Village, at bus stops on International Blvd.
4/4/12
4:30 p.m.

We are also going to have actions in Oakland regarding our local buses. $53 million annually in swap fees is being paid to the big banks like Chase, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, etc., by the San Francisco Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), which cut $52 million a year out of the budget for local bus services throughout the region. We have an ongoing campaign to get the MTC to renegotiate those swaps and fund transit instead. Our campaign is called ReFund Transit.

April 4th is the anniversary of the 1968 assassination of MLK, and the 1967 speech in which he made the connection between the Vietnam war and poverty at home.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact Alia Phelps with the ACCE:

Photos from the Defense Against Hate Crime Prosecutions and Stay Away Orders from OO to UCB  Press Conference – April 03, 2012
“The press conference was an overwhelming success. Great statements from Yolanda, Michael Siegel, John Viola, Jesse and Shane. We got the real story out there; city doesn’t care about hate crimes unless there’s political benefit, OPD engages in discriminatory policing, DA is trying to ‘tame’ OO with unconstitutional application of the law.” ~Jaime Omar Yassin

Last BBQ and Speak Out – De Fremery Park, Oakland – Saturday, April 7, 2012 – 3:00 to 7:00 PM

Occupy Oakland is having its last BBQ in West Oakland at Lil Bobby Hutton Park (De Fremery Park) at 18th and Adeline, from 3-7pm, this Saturday, April 7, 2012. Everyone has been so amazing and we really have been pulling it together; thank you so much for your efforts and contributions.

We will be cooking this Friday, April 6, 2012, at the First Congregational Church of Oakland on 27th and Harrison, from 11am-3pm. It was a lot of fun last time, so if you want to come help cook and meet everyone, please do!

If you want to make a dish for this last BBQ, rice and beans, a veggie dish, or a dessert would all be great.

Please contact: kitchen@occupyoakland.org for any questions or support you may need.

[#2 for 4/4/12 GA] Door to Door Outreach Proposal

This is a proposal for Occupy Oakland to systematically go door to door to meet every family in Oakland with the emphasis on organizing and recruiting women to become a part of the Occupy movement. We emphasize women because women are the masses of the people and are the most oppressed among the 99%. When we organize the women, we also organize the youth because of women’s relationship to the youth. The women and the youth represent at least 75% of the population. Women are the first teachers of both the boys and girls and this is why you can measure a country by the political maturity of its women. The emancipation of women is the key to the emancipation of humanity. Men oppressing women is the biggest contradiction among the people. Women’s struggle for liberation must be seen as a part of the general struggle against capitalism, and never as an isolated struggle directed against men.

The 1 percent has waged an unrelenting propaganda war against women. The 1 percent is in power and in control of the education of the 99%, and that has affected how even the 99% relate to each other. An example is how Hollywood educates the masses of the people to judge women based on their looks. In a lot of cases women are more concerned with their looks than their character. Men are educated to think that a woman’s looks are the most important thing about her. As a result, women see themselves from the outside in, which means they judge themselves according to how someone else judges how they look. This is a form of slavery. It is severely anti-woman and an assault on all women. We should judge everybody by their character which is internal. Looks are something that are superficial. Character is the real essence of the person. Any person should be more concerned about their character than how they look. For instance, if a person is a servant of the people, they are beautiful regardless of how they look. It is very important for the 99% to reeducate ourselves in this manner.

Some advantages of going door to door to organize the masses of the people:

1. The only way to effective action is the organization of the masses of the people. The oppressed cannot be liberated without their participation.
2. We will be able to explain why it is necessary to organize the 99% in order to take power from the 1%.
3. Build the Occupy Oakland movement.
4. The organizers of Occupy Oakland can educate and radicalize the people, while at the same time be radicalized and educated by the people (This is how people are transformed into revolutionaries.).
5. Organize the 99% to be self-reliant and break the dependency from the 1% ( i.e. organizing collective kitchens, collective gardens, collective housing, childcare, etc.).
6. It’s the surest way of coming to know the people. Go to the people, live among them, learn from them, love them, serve them, plan with them, start with what they know, build on what they have.
7. We will come to know all the resources that we have among the people in order to use them for the people’s liberation.
8. We can encourage other Occupy movements to organize the people and grow our movement.
9. Encourage and build women’s organizations everywhere because the weapon of the oppressed is organization.
10. Develop a strong and active organization of men for the emancipation of women.

[#3 for 4/4/12 GA] Clearing House Proposal

Several OO committees, as well as other OWS groups in the Bay Area, are in the midst of organizing actions and events that we are all excited about. We have been looking forward to sharing information and getting feedback from one another, and believe that the GA is the proper space/time to do this. To this end, and because spring and summer are approaching, we propose to have an organized process (Clearing House) for sharing actions on Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 at the GA.

Goals:
1) Information sharing brought forward by groups of 3 or more.
2) Feedback and calendaring.
3) Revitalize and outreach for the GA’s in the spring.

General Ideas:
– This Clearing House will support the coordination and communication between Spring/Summer Offensive groups, so they can present what they are working on, folks can give feedback, and individuals can hear about actions and find ways to connect.
– It will NOT be a decision-making space. No large group decisions will be made on that day.
– We would like it to happen on Sunday, April 22nd, 2012, during the GA.
– The working group proposing this will recruit participation. We hope to recruit a lot of people because this is a new approach.
– We will try this as an experiment and, if it works, then make it happen periodically.
– All groups who want to present will put their name in the hat, and the order will be chosen at random. A group needs to be at least 3 people.

[#4 for 4/4/12 GA] Proposal for the Endorsement and Support of the Dignity and Resistance May Day March and Rally

The Bay Area Coalition for Dignity and Resistance has called for a march and rallies on May Day (May 1, 2012), starting at 3pm at the Fruitvale BART plaza. Many Occupy Oakland people have been attending the meetings as part of the coalition, along with people from Decolonize Oakland, Occupy the Hood, Occupy SF, immigrant community organizations, and others. Monday, 3/26/12, the Occupy Oakland May Day Assembly voted to endorse this event and bring a proposal to the GA for endorsement by Occupy Oakland.

The kick-off rally will be in Fruitvale, followed by a march to San Antonio Park, with another rally and children’s activities. We will march downtown to OGP for a final rally. This event is expected to last until 6 or 7pm. There will also be some short stops along the march route, at designated targets, with speakers from a flatbed truck. Permits have been attained for the entire march route, ending at OGP. The permits for OGP, San Antonio Park, and for sound are in progress. We decided to permit the march and rallies to reduce the risk to undocumented people who will join the event.

We ask that Occupy Oakland not only endorse this action, but encourage participation in it. We ask that those planning other activities that day not plan them for this time period from 3-7pm. We also ask for separation in time and space from any direct action which could increase the risk for undocumented people or families with children. Like the OO BBQs, this is an ideal opportunity to outreach to various communities around the Bay Area who will be part of this march, and to open the door for further joint actions.
