NOT Wanted. At the Port, or in our City. Plus Port Truckers Thank Community Supporters.

Yvonne Liu captured the moment perfectly. At one point, around 6pm, the picketers realized that Miguel Masso, the Oakland police officer who killed 18-year old Alan Blueford was standing in the scrimmage line of cops. People started shouting, “Killer! Child killer!” until the field commander removed Masso from the line. This is the second time Miguel Masso has been told “NOT Wanted!” by Oakland’s citizens. The first time occurred at Oscar Grant Plaza during the Trayvon Martin protests in August, when he was again pulled off the line by his … Continued

OO & JAB Stand in Solidarity with BART Workers on Strike.

Justice 4 Alan Blueford Coalition and Occupy Oakland peeps stood alongside SEIU 1021 rank and file as they shut down the Port of Oakland almost a year ago. With the BART strike now official, J4AB once again stands with SEIU 1021 rank and file and all the other BART workers involved. JAB coalition members at the Alan Blueford Center for Justice (Office and Facebook) produced this awesome video:     Occupy Oakland passed a resolution on October 10th, 2013 in support of BART and AC Transit workers and a possible … Continued

“FUCK That! No More Killing!'” Continuing the Fight Against Police Violence.

On October 22nd, one week hence, supporters and members of some 50 families of those executed by California police will converge on Sacramento in a National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation. They will demand an end to police violence. From California Attorney General Kamala Harris. They will demand proper investigations into their loved ones’ deaths – not the whitewashes that are typically performed by police investigating themselves and the tragic farce that is District Attorneys refusing to investigate the police. The … Continued

To Occupy. Perchance to Occupy Oakland.

Laleh Behbehanian, one of Occupy Oakland’s finest, spoke at the 2nd Anniversary Party on 10/10/23 commemorating the beginning of the encampment at Oscar Grant Plaza. Here is the video of her talk, recorded by Mindy, and below, a few excerpts from the prepared text. Her theme was What is this thing we call Occupy Oakland? What is this thing we call Occupy Oakland? We know that it isn’t simply some group, or organization- it’s more than that. It is isn’t merely some space – it’s so much more than the … Continued

Massive Police Presence At OO 2nd Anniversary Party. Because. Stupidity.

Eighteen Police cars, vans and even a mini-tank lined 14th St. as Occupy Oakland peeps came together on October 10th to do such nefarious activities as Chalking! (aka vandalism) Catching up with old friends! (aka conspiracy) Eating! (aka feeding without a permit) Listening to awesome speakers! (aka talking without a permit) Watching cartoons, documentaries and movies! (aka creating a public nuisiance) thereby terrorizing downtown Oakland’s usual residents who had to endure vast quantities of nutritious food prepared by OO Kitchen peeps and Food Not Bombs instead of their usual fare. … Continued

Proposal To Endorse BART Solidarity Rally and, if it Comes to Be, a BART Strike.

This was a proposal presented at Sunday’s General Assembly by the Transit Workers Solidarity Committee. Insofar as the General Assembly did not have a quorum, it was not approved. However, The Occupy Oakland General Assembly in late October of 2011 passed a resolution in support of all workers and in solidarity with strikes, which will stand us in good stead in validating our support for BART workers in their current struggle against austerity and the one percent. At the 2nd Anniversary Party on Thursday the organizers of the celebration may … Continued

Peter Byrne Speaks to Berkeley Post Office Defenders on BlumStein: The Duo Looting the Post Office and UC.

On Saturday, September 28th, 2013, investigative reporter Peter Byrne was kind enough to come and address a rally to save the Berkeley Post Office and fight back against the privatization of our commons. Byrne recently published the e-book (soon to available in print!) Going Postal: U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s husband sells post offices to his friends, cheap.”. Excerpts from the book were published in a recent East Bay Express. In the book he describes how Richard Blum and his wife, Senator Feinstein, claim they do not collaborate but in fact … Continued

From the Foreclosure Defense Group

The Occupy Oakland Foreclosure Defense Group has been meeting regularly since March of 2012. While we are all very proud of our accomplishments as a group, a number of factors–including the changing political terrain and shifting priorities for some key organizers–have led us to decide that it’s time to disband. We are keeping our hot line available and will refer callers to other local resources. We are also keeping our text alert system up and running for the foreseeable future. The relationships established and political will that we have built … Continued

The Case Against Curfews

In light of Oakland Councilperson Noel Gallo’s recent fetish with the idea of curfews, here is an article published August 11th, 2012 in the Occupied Oakland Tribune (now inaccessible), when then Chief of Police Howard Jordan was spewing the same bullshit. —– By JP Massar “Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan wants a curfew. In the widespread absence of appropriate “parental controls” Jordan says a curfew is critical to reduce the risks posed by teens and younger children hanging out late at night in some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods. … Continued
