Paranoia Strikes Deep

What a field-day for the heat A thousand people in the street Singing songs and carrying signs Mostly say, hooray for our side Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you’re always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away I’ve been thinking for some time that Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth should be the official Occupy Oakland anthem. Despite being written by the appalling Stephen ‘Love the One You’re With’ Stills, it remains the most evocative song of … Continued

Occupy Jam Band?

I’m a vocalist, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist, and I’m in a vocal harmonies based band called ‘She Flies’. I’d love to network with other Oakland musicians and put together a little jam band project to support and entertain at Occupy events. I figure we could put together a set, maybe half an hour or an hour worth of covers to start out with, some of the socially conscious activist music from the 60’s, some stuff that’s more current… Wouldn’t be a high rehearsal commitment, I figure we could probably practice … Continued

Who is 1 Percent

Who is the “1 Percent”? Commentary/Politics – Editorials ShareThis Written by Kathleen McCarthy    Wednesday, 29 February 2012 06:21 The new meme cheerfully propagated by the mainstream media (MSM) is the 1-percent-versus-the-99-percent conflict, which fits perfectly into its strategy for maintaining strict political divisions of Left versus Right. This bipartisan strategy is absolutely critical for advancing the agenda of the “1 percent,” which, simply stated, is to own and/or control the world’s natural and economic resources, including land and mineral rights, water sources, food and energy production, transportation, money supply, … Continued

[Passed at 3/4/12 GA] Proposal to Disband the Media Commitee

1. Last Saturday, an offensive, irresponsible and dangerous article titled “Occupational Awareness” was posted on the OO Media web site. Occupy Oakland denounces the article. The article contains personal attacks on an individual in Occupy Oakland that are untrue and unsubstantiated, and that are extremely dangerous to him and to the movement.  The article appeals and legitimates a fantasy of “terrorist threat” that has consistently been used by the state to repress and silence protest, and to create false “enemies,” and uses classic racist tactics of racial profiling to do … Continued

Minimum Wage Campaign

Ralph Nader had posed some very interesting ideas about the possibility of a new campaign for Occupy. In this article (http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/nader_to_occupy_help_raise_the_minimum_wage_20120227/) in Truthdig he describes the overwhelming  economic justice and political appeal of movements to raise the minimum wage. We do not have to see this as  relinquishing Occupy’s stepping down to engage in mainstream politics but as a reaching out to the millions of workers at the lower levels of the wage slavery scale. I’d like to hear others ideas baout such a possible campaign.         … Continued

Finest Worksong. Interview #2 with Aaron Lehmer, Bay Localize by Willi Paul, PlanetShifter.com Magazine http://planetshifter.com/node/1995   excerpt – “I think people fear an uncertain future, and wonder about their place in it. Young people know that more than anyone, having experienced high levels of unemployment and insecurity after graduating high school and college in recent years. Change is always scary on some level. But it’s also inevitable. By opening ourselves up to the changes ahead, and aligning our spirits, talents, and visions with a more localized future, we can literally … Continued

Outside Agitators

Every time there’s a protest in Oakland, there’s a whole lot of blather in the corporate press about those evil and mysterious ‘outside agitators’ who come to cause trouble and use our city as their ‘playground’. The storyline was alive and well during the Oscar Grant demonstrations of 2009 (otherwise known as The Defenestration of Foot Locker) and is once again lurking openly within mainstream reporting about Occupy Oakland actions. After J28, we were solemnly informed that ‘only’ 35% of those arrested were Oakland residents. Setting aside the fact … Continued

RCP? Really?

The last couple of GA’s I have been to there has been an increase in RCP visibility.  I find this disturbing for a couple of reasons. Yes I will give you a bulleted list because bullets are “revolutionary”. R.C.P.-Revolutionary Communist Party, USA.  I am not sure why they insist on having the word “revolutionary” in their acronym.  I suppose there must have been a non-revolutionary Communist Party at one point that was only concerned with having bake sales and organizing a bowling league. Maoist-The RCP is stated to be a Maoist organization.  If … Continued

Where the name Oscar Grant Plaza comes from

Not alot of people were a part of Occupy Oakland at the very beginning, and some may be wondering why people call the plaza outside of city hall Oscar Grant Plaza, rather than the city $1000 loan online given name which is Frank Ogawa Plaza First, a quick background. Frank Ogawa was a victim of the US injustice system and spent many years in a Japanese internment camp during WWII, and was elected to Oakland city Council in 1966, and was the first Japanese American elected to hold a city … Continued
