Check out the “1968” Exhibit at the OMCA

The Oakland Museum extended its 1968 Exhibit through November 25. Tomorrow, Sunday, November 4th is the last time to see it during one of OMCA’s monthly free days, otherwise it is a prohibitive $12 (until a few years ago the Oakland Museum was always free for everyone all year long). 1968 was a pretty amazing time to be alive, I was 10 at the time. When I was a young child I almost dreaded growing up. The society seemed so conformist & macho in the early sixties, which very much … Continued

For Immediate Release: Take Back OGP
On October 25 of last year, the Oakland Commune at Oscar Grant Plaza was raided with enough brutal force to gain international attention. Since then, continuous state repression and police brutality have sought to divide Oakland and keep its residents from reclaiming public space in a time of local, national and global austerity. The Oakland Commune served as a socio/political refuge for Oakland residents. It was open and free to all and provided a space where people could traverse race and class divides in order to share food, discussion and … Continued

Confronting the Many Faces of Repression
Rethinking Repression Over the past year, we have experienced many forms of overt police repression, from the camp eviction and night of tear gas on October 25th, to raids on the vigil, to snatch and grab squads on May Day. We have come to expect the riot-clad police, with their batons and chemical weapons, although repression comes in other forms as well. As a community, we have not been sufficiently attuned to these other faces of repression. As the Anti-Repression Committee (ARC), we too have focused primarily on the overt … Continued
Take Back The Plaza! Overnight Vigil + FTP March #O25

During the early hours of October 25, 2011, hundreds of violent police officers stormed into Occupy Oakland’s home base at Oscar Grant Plaza, near city hall, to evict protesters & to remove their belongings. 96 of our comrades were arrested after the cops used tear gas, flash-bang grenades and less-than-lethal munitions to subdue the crowd. Occupy Oakland’s spirit was not damaged, we were emboldened and radicalized as thousands returned that afternoon to stand up and fight back. Unforgettably, so did the p…olice. The battle for the plaza went on into … Continued
Who is the finance committee?
The day before yesterday, the finance committee posted here on OO’s website that there was a meeting, yesterday, October 17th, at Awaken Cafe at 6pm. Curious about the rumors that have been circulating, I decided to go because I really want the finance committee to have a chance to counter those rumors, to explain their side of the story. http://occupyoakland.org/2012/10/finance-committee-meeting-oct-17-2012/ I have never asked for money from Occupy Oakland but do feel myself to be a part of it as I have participated in many protests, paid bail, put money … Continued
