On July 11th, several key bills are being heard by California Senate and Assembly committees, and SURJ has been asked to show up to support!
PLEASE RSVP BELOW!
Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (LSPC) / All of Us or None is co-sponsoring AB 1008, Ban the Box, which would make it unlawful for an employer to include on a job application any question that seeks the disclosure of an applicant’s criminal history. On July 11th, the bill is being heard by the Senate Judiciary committee. All of Us or None has asked SURJ to mobilize its members to come out to Sacramento and pack the house for the hearing.
Earlier that day, the Assembly Public Safety committee is hearing another vital bill – SB 10, the California Bail Reform Act — which would ensure that people are not held in dangerous, overcrowded jails after arrest simply because they cannot afford to post bail. SB 10 is co-sponsored by the Ella Baker Center and Essie Justice Group.
Come join SURJ members on July 11th to attend these important hearings and support these important bills! We will be organizing carpools!

Accessibility:
The two hearings are taking place at the California State Capitol. We are currently undertaking research to fully understand the accessibility of the hearing rooms. From the State Capitol website, we understand that the North (L Street) and South (N Street) Annex entrances have wheelchair ramps just inside the entrance. Sidewalks leading to the Capitol are wheelchair accessible.Elevators are available throughout the Capitol. In the Annex, elevators can be found across from the Governor’s Office. In the historic part of the Capitol, the elevators are located on either side of the rotunda. Restrooms are located in the north/south hallway on the first floor annex, on either side of the rotunda in the historic side of the building, and in additional areas on the various floors of the annex. Bathrooms are wheelchair accessible. Additional accessibility information will be posted as we receive it. For any questions, please email
