On Feb 23 OpenOakland invites you to come and learn how technology can empower communities, and how you can use tech to get more civic too!

Technology plays a vital role in connecting people and their government- Connecting Oakland is an interactive event where you will learn about how Oaklanders have used tech to:

  • make city hall more accessible,
  • to improve transparency; and
  • promote civic engagement.

You’ll see first hand how an app is built in Oakland- from an initial idea, to a concept, to the data scraping to app design. Built in Oakland, for Oaklanders!

We’ll also host a design session to help you work on an app or technology project- to prepare for the next hackathon or to work with OpenOakland’s volunteers through the year. We’ll also have speakers from the City of Oakland showing us how to engage with them and influence decisions.

We’ll also be joined by some of Kamala Harris’s team (our Attorney General) to show us their new data app that shares data on police uses of force- Open Justice.

Light refreshments will be provided.
