What is a “JOB”?

“Why don’t I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into Jobland where jobs grow on little jobbies.” -Charlie Kelly (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) WTF is a job anyways? Why do we need for every able man and woman to find something to keep them occupied for 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. What an arbitrary random number! Let me also refer you to a Scott Keller (3rd party candidate for prez) quote: “A “job” is NOT a human … Continued

Honor Oscar Grant in our Sunday best–with our families!

Hope to see everyone who’s been involved in the work of the People so far, out in force on Sunday, Jan. 1–and I’d like to suggest that people participate in the Noontime rally and march to Fruitvale BART with your families, and wearing your Sunday best!  –except maybe with sensible shoes.  I hope my four-year-old is one of droves of young’uns, and that my suit-and-tie don’t make me look like some money-grubbing jackass! Happy New Year everyone. 14265

Oak Tree Update- Results of Soil Investigation by City

Copied below is a letter we prepared to PWA Director Troyan, addressing the recent soil moisture investigation the City conducted around the oak.  As you will read, there are some issues. The City investigation report can be found on page three at: http://www2.oaklandnet.com/oakca/groups/cityadministrator/documents/report/oak032693.pdf  Dear Public Works Director Troyan, We have serious concerns with the findings of the “Status of Jack London Oak Tree” report included in the 12-16-11 City Administrators Weekly Report.  These concerns include: December 8th Investigation–Eight (8) inches is not a sufficient depth by which we can accurately assess the soil profile.  … Continued

Occupy Next Year

What’s next for the Occupy movement? That’s the question on everyone’s lips, which is a huge accomplishment in itself. But it’s also a huge question with huge import. Of course the only possible answer is that there isn’t one thing that’s next for the entire movement.  In fact, it’s not even one movement.  The movement in Des Moines or Walnut Creek looks very different, as the media love to point out, from Occupy Oakland, which I’m told is is very different from Occupy Wall Street.  It’s a movement of movements; … Continued

Let us rebuild a commune we will never surrender!

On November 14th the commune was raided once again  and someone with a megaphone insisted that we take 14th and Broadway. I screamed “No! We need to stay to defend the commune!” and tried to hold a vote that was again derailed by this same man with the megaphone… If we are going to make any major tactical decision we should not do so without consensus! As a result the 800-1000 people that were there that morning went to 14th and Broadway and abandoned 33 people including a homeless man … Continued
