The next Post Salon will discuss two important question: What would a Public Bank mean for Oakland, and how should Oakland go about picking a new schools’ superintendent?

A Public Bank operates in the public interest, rather than operating to generate short-term profits for shareholders. North Dakota has a public bank. Santa Fe, Santa Rosa, and other communities are looking at creating them.

Speakers will look at: What is a Public bank? Why does it matter? Can we get one in Oakland?

Second, the city’s superintendent is leaving in February, and many residents are saying that a replacement should reflect the values and priorities of Oaklanders.

Some suggestions:

  1. No interim superintendent. Use a team of locals instead, while search for permanent superintendent goes on.
  2. A deep look at compensation. Is $400,000 a year too much to pay a superintendent, when teachers and other employees cannot afford to pay rent?
  3. Hire a leader who involves and empowers the community.

Although the national elections were ugly, the Oakland community has won many progressive victories. The Oakland Post and the Post Salon Community Assembly played an important role in several of those victories.
