May 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
David Swanson is the co-author, with Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin, of “NATO: What You Need to Know,” a concise, 200-page summary of NATO’s supremely violent, imperialist history. The North Atlantic Treaty signed in 1949 proclaimed its commitment to peace and the principles of the UN Charter, but “the real glue that brought NATO countries together was opposition to communism and socialism.” It was created not only to counter the USSR, but also to defeat European communist and socialist movements and crush revolutionary, anti-colonial struggles. At the time of its founding, Britain, France, Belgium, … Continued

May 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
“Police Brutality” That is the name of  my book. I invite all who are interested to come to a meeting. We will discuss relations between the police and the people, the effects of police violence, and its relations to many other issues – like housing, the homeless, and the nature of free speech. I do not make a case for cahoots. What I analyze is the police culture that can be brutal, and think that it moves toward their own end goal. I analyze local videos, local witnesses, and the … Continued

About OccupyOakland.org

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.

If you would like to participate while the pandemic is still amidst, send an email to occupyoakland-request@lists.riseup.net. Check the calendar or this text to see if we have resumed in-person meetings.
