Now that the General Strike is upon us in just a few days, it is important to try to place this triumphant day in historical context. Immediately after the General Assembly there will be a multimedia presentation on the 1946 General Strike in Oakland CA presented by Gifford Hartman.
(Gifford Hartman has worked as an EFL/ESL teacher for the past 15 years; he has worked in South Korea, Greece and in the Bay Area. He is presently partially unemployed after an unsuccessful 4-day strike at a San Francisco ESL school last March. He currently works part-time in a literacy program in a public library. He has written about class struggle, historically and in the present, and has given presentations about the class war from an internationalist perspective in locations across North America, as well as in Europe and Asia. He is an original member of the Insane Dialectical Posse (IDP) and helped create the Red & Black Collection of council communist, ultra-left, Situationist International, left communist, anti-Bolshevik communist, and class struggle anarchist publications within the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Oakland.)
