Last July, after intense community pressure, the Berkeley City Council approved a 12% cut to the $72 million Berkeley Police budget with an “eventual goal” of reducing BPD’s budget by 50%. Reductions in BPD’s budget would fund the new Department of Transportation and Specialized Care Unit.
