Beyond Occupy – Five Years Hence.

It will shortly have been five years since tents appeared on Oscar Grant Plaza; almost five years since OPD turned downtown Oakland into a war zone.

Since then farms and Post Offices have been Occupied, freeways, bridges and City Council meetings taken over. Battles have been lost and won, while, arguably, the hurly-burly continues unabated.

Has anything changed?

Come to ‘Beyond Occupy – Five Years Hence’ on October 8th, to reminisce about the past, debate the present and discuss what the next five years will bring.

Beyond Occupy, at Oscar Grant Plaza (like, where else?) will be an art and photography show with music and speakers, celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Occupy Movement, highlighting its achievements and the work that has continued since the heady days of October and November, 2011.

It has been organized primarily by Kelly Johnson, with aid from many associated with Occupy Oakland and Occupy San Francisco.

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.
