OAKLAND — A drive-by shooter firing on a car near the Fruitvale BART station Thursday morning missed his target, but the car wound up crashing into two other vehicles and a taco truck outside a popular restaurant, police said.
After crashing, the occupants of the car ran away as the gunman continued to shoot at them but did not hit them, police said. Two vehicles in a parking lot were hit by gunfire.
The violence unfolded about 10:35 a.m. in the 3900 block of San Leandro Street when at least one gunman in a vehicle began shooting at another car as they drove northbound on San Leandro.
The car being shot at collided with another vehicle in the 3900 block of San Leandro but kept going to avoid the gunfire.
The people being chased crashed into another car at the intersection of San Leandro Street and Fruitvale Avenue before going into the parking lot of the Guadalajara Restaurant, where it hit a parked taco truck, police said.
As the occupants tried to flee, they were shot at again but not hit.
The suspect vehicle sped away and was being sought.
Fruitvale Avenue was closed between San Leandro and East 12th streets while police investigated the incident.
The occupants of the uninvolved cars struck during the chase sustained minor injuries.
