[Passed at 3/7/12 GA] Proposal to Change Time of March 21st General Assembly to 7:00 PM to Accomodate Occupy Interfaith Service

Categories: GA Proposals, GA Resolutions

The Interfaith Tent Caucus requests that the start time of the General Assembly on March 21, 2012 be moved back one hour to 7 pm so that we can offer a national Occupy Interfaith Service and act of solidarity and resistance at Grant/Ogawa Plaza from 6-7 pm. The service will feature faith leaders from all over the United States, members of the Occupy Faith network, who will be attending a national gathering March 20-22, hosted by the Interfaith Tent at Oakland.

As part of the Interfaith Service on March 21, the Interfaith Tent will exercise our First Amendment rights by erecting a canopy on the plaza as a sacred space and declaring it a religious sanctuary. While we cannot guarantee the safety of those currently on “stay away” orders, we intend to provide clergy protection and sanctuary under the canopy for any person with a stay-away order who wishes to attend the service and General Assembly that evening. We will also provide clergy escorts for those entering and leaving the plaza as an extension of the sanctuary.

We invite all of Occupy Oakland and our friends in the Bay Area to attend this special service, to meet faith occupiers from around the U.S., and to participate in the honoring of freedom of religion and religious sanctuary, whether or not you are religious.

Proposed by the Interfaith Tent @ Oakland.
