We are here as part of: Code Pink, Women4Peace, WAK: Women Against Killing, Grandmothers Against War, and other anti-war activist groups. We in Code Pink and WAK work to enable, value, and project women’s voices, ideas, actions, and leadership, as we work to end all forms of violence, especially war. The imminent threat of a new war with Iran carries with it the real danger of yet another horrendous global, human, environmental, and not to mention political catastrophe. The voice of the people needs to be heard to stop this from happening, and we would like to work with Occupy, individuals, communities, and working groups to brainstorm tactics, actions, and solutions to prevent this war from happening.
We are calling for an Iran Action Assembly on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at 11:00 AM. It will be held at the La Pena Cultural Center at 3105 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. We will discuss this threat, the history of relations between the US and Iran, and possible actions that we, the people, can undertake to ensure our resounding “NO!” is heard.
We also want to figure out what wars abroad have to do with foreclosures, budget cuts, homelessness, the military and prison industrial complex, and especially Occupy.
We hope that Occupy will vote to endorse the Iran Action Assembly as a joint assembly with us. We also hope that at this assembly we can begin an Occupy working group or committee that will regularly report back to the GA.
The program thus far will include: workshops, food, educational exercises, group discussions, and actions.
Reason for the Iran Action Assembly:
War and the military and prison industrial complex are and have always been integral to forming and building our politics, economy, culture, and country. In 2011, we spent two billion dollars a day on war, military occupations, and attacks against other nations, which primarily affected peoples of color. In the US, we make up 4-5% of the world’s population, while we consume 25-60% of the world’s resources. We are able to secure so many resources because of our military, and our willingness to engage in the conquering, capturing, and destroying of people and their lands and resources.
