[Passed at 2/26/12 GA] Proposal for Day of Solidarity Between Oakland and Palestine on Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Categories: GA Proposals, GA Resolutions

We ask OO to endorse a Day of Solidarity Between Oakland and Palestine on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, the third anniversary of the shooting of Tristan Anderson. Tristan is a longtime Oakland activist who was shot in the head with a tear gas grenade in 2009 while doing human rights work in Palestine. He survived, but had a large area of his brain removed. We envision March 13th beginning at about 4:00 PM with a press conference followed by a rally at OG Plaza.

We will then march through the streets of Oakland with posters of some of those who have been killed while protesting in Palestine. We hope to draw attention to the use of deadly force against protestors in Palestine and throughout the Arab world. We aim to build solidarity and raise awareness about the role the US government plays in occupation and the suppression of social movements throughout the Arab world. The march will culminate in the planting of an olive tree in partnership between Occupy Oakland and the people in Muslim and Arab American communities (who are not already identified with OO). We will rally together. Following the rally, we will move the programming inside (location to be announced) and share a big meal. There will be a panel discussion and possibly some entertainment.

Confirmed speakers thus far include: Scott Olsen, Sarah Shourd, Arafat Kanaan, and Tristan Anderson. More to come.

We hope that March 13th can be a bridge building day between Occupy Oakland and Muslim and Arab American communities. Many of the logistics are still being worked out, but we think we can pull it off. It should be a beautiful and powerful day. Please join us in supporting Tristan Anderson and Palestine.
