Proposal to rephrase “Pros/Cons” to “Constructive Criticism” [Pulled. Straw-polled instead]

Categories: GA Proposals

Simple Proposal for a Less Divisive GA
The current Occupy Oakland GA system is based around a pro/con debate.  However, pros and
cons are inherently confrontational, creating strife, and are against the entire spirit of
“consensus” which should be about working and feeling “together”.
As such, this proposal calls for the “pro/con” section of GAs to be replaced with a “constructive
suggestions” section.  Instead of being asked to speak out in favor or against a proposal, people
will be asked to give constructive suggestions on how the proposal can be improved.
Largely this is just a change in tone:
●If people think there is absolutely nothing redeeming in a proposal, they can still speak out
against it.
●If people think a proposal is perfect in every way, they can still just praise it.
●But the emphasis during this time should be on ways to better achieve consensus and
improve proposals before they’re passed.
And since proposals are now living documents, the proposers can adjust their proposal based
on constructive feedback.
We believe this proposal, if passed, will help to reduce fighting and arguments within the GA, and
facilitate solidarity.

Yes go for it. Constructive critiques are a great way to build collective knowledge and improve productivity.

    killer idea.
I have been thinking for a while now that people have abandoned the practice of consensus building in favor of adversarial arguing. That causes folks to pick sides and defend them, rather than attempt to reconcile differing approaches.
