We propose Occupy Oakland endorse and support the Occupy Our Homes movement and the successful continuing occupation of the 10th Street Home at 10th & Mandela.
December 6th National Day of Action mobilized thousands of people from the Occupy movement and local communities all around the country to stand up to Wall Street banks. We protested foreclosures, took back homes, stopped foreclosure auctions and a number of other actions that highlighted the role of the banks in the current housing crisis and worked to concretely stop people from losing their homes.
The occupation of the 10th Street Home represents the strength of the Occupy movement and the 99% to take back homes from the banks that they left vacant and deteriorated for years while millions in our communities are left struggling to find affordable housing or just left homeless and forgotten. We already know from a recent memo sent out by Bank of America that banks are extremely nervous about the “impact their industry” this tactic pose. The 10th Street Home is a tactical leverage model the Occupy movement and the 99% can used all around the country and internationally by taking up “real” assets of the 1% that the movement can use to put pressure banks to negotiate with homeowners instead of fraudulently foreclosing on them, to get government-sponsored banks like Fannie Mae to turn their vacant homes to affordable housing for low-income communities, and to make systematic changes for a more equitable society.
Therefore, Occupy Oakland endorsement and support of the Occupy Our Homes movement and the occupation of the 10th Street Home use it as a tactical leverage model for the rest of the Occupy Wall Street movement to replicate all around the country to move beyond holding public space in protest but to take concrete action that force real impact on the 1% while benefiting and strengthen the 99%.
10th Street Home is only the beginning.
