Death of a young man shot who came to the Occupy Oakland location

Categories: Open Mic

I hope all the folks who have been participating in Occupy Oakland, will not allow themselves to be drawn into any vandalism or retaliation for the death of this young man.  If you are angry and frightened and hurt – I don’t blame you, and you have my sympathy and understanding.  However, retaliation in any form of violence or vandalism will result in more deaths – so I encourage all of you to remain as calm as you can.

I’m 72 years old and have lived in the Bay Area since 1960, been a part of just about every major demonstration since that time.  During Anti-Vietnam war demonstrations we had monitors.  I was one of them, and had to  stop a young person from trying to open up a fire hydrant which would have just wreaked havoc and caused a very brutal response from the authorities.

So I urge you all, while you mourn, to keep calm.

I doubt there’ll be any retaliation, violent or otherwise, Phyllis. In fact, the last info I heard was that the OO was planning a candlelight vigil for him. For the first time since OO got it’s start a month ago, its participants and the police department agree. The acting chief of OPD himself held a press conference to that effect this morning, stating that this was the end result of a fistfight between several individuals that started outside the encampment, not in it.

That said, all of our deepest sympathies to Alex and the people who loved him.

It is really sad that the police serve the state like machines. The capitalist state authorities will do what ever they want to keep the system that they benefit from in existence. It is the labor of the 99% or even more specific, the proletariat that the bourgeois continue to grow their wealth and power. People are saying that many get shot in Oakland on a regular basis and that we do not show concern until now. This is not it. I support the occupy Oakland and have not participated in past protests because the core issue is finally being spoken about in masses: the end or an alternative to capitalism.
