My Letter to the City Reps of Oakland

Categories: Open Mic

Here is my letter just sent to the City Attorney, City Admin., Mayor and all members of the City Council of Oakland.  I encourage others to do the same.  With love for the Oakland Commune!

November 21, 2011

Greetings Attorney Barbara Parker, Mayor Jean Quan,
and Council Members of Oakland:

I am writing today to convey my outrage by the abuse of power and waste of my hard-earned few tax dollars that have been and are currently being wasted on over-policing Frank Ogawa Plaza and using our Public Works personnel to attack the good works by average citizens accessing public spaces.  I just watched a video showing the police standing on the north side of the plaza yesterday, Sunday, babysitting the Public Works personnel who came out late in the afternoon (paying them time and a half and possibly overtime) to destroy and remove a food garden constructed by a number of Oakland citizens involved in the nationwide Occupy movement.

I have attached the video link for your review:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55kLwXaqRF4&feature=share

What in the world is the matter with the Oakland city politicians who blatantly waste taxpayer dollars while we slate five elementary schools to close in Oakland at the end of this school year and deny senior citizens access to their senior centers while police get paid upwards of $100k a year plus full pension funding and PAY FOR PRIVATE SECURITY SERVICES at who knows how much per officer?  Have all the politicians in Oakland gone mad???  If I didn’t know any better I would say that it appears as if the City government is PURPOSELY wasting millions of dollars to crush a mass movement in order to BLAME the citizens when the city of Oakland eventually files for bankruptcy.  How else could a rational human being wrap their minds around your actions?

If the citizens of Oakland are able to organize and file a class action lawsuit against the Oakland City Council, Mayor AND City Administrator for abuse of taxation dollars then I will find a way to do it.

I want this attack on poor and disenfranchised Oaklanders who identify with the Occupy movement to STOP IMMEDIATELY and have Mayor Quan the City Administrator to sign an agreement to end the police war on the citizens of Oakland this week.  Send the police back out on the streets where they can solve some CRIMES for heaven’s sake!

I will be contacting my friends and neighbors in and outside of Oakland and requesting they contact you and the other members of the Oakland city government to end this insanity.

Sincerely,
Outraged Taxpayer & part of the 99%

Awesome letter, just make sure you sign it with your real name. I sent Jean Quan a letter the morning of the first raid calling her a fascist, I signed it with my name as a voter in Oakland, and i don’t regret it one bit. I’m not “anonymous.” I’m a citizen. And I’m outraged at the violence against these people who are protesting. And although I’ve seen a lot of problems, a lot of danger, in Occupy Oakland, I believe that almost all of that is the product of the police/corporate state, not the result of Occupy Oakland. There is a bit too much of a party atmosphere that leads to permissiveness and can get out of control, at least in the context of a protest. Sometimes at Occupy Oakland when it was in full swing, it felt more like a victory party than a protest. But the reaction of the city, all the police and now the private security (Blackwater in Oakland?) is just fucking ridiculous and I will not stand for it as a citizen of this City, this State, and this Nation.
