Four Factors that Made Occupy Oakland the Occupy Game Changer

Re-Posted from Hyphenated Republic Jaime Omar Yassin People like End of Year retrospectives. So here’s mine on Occupy Oakland, highlighting what I think were the game-changing features of the movement that have made it arguably, and according to many, the vanguard of nation-wide Occupy. The ‘Open’ Camp: From the evening of October 10, the camp at Frank Ogawa Plaza/Oscar Grant Plaza was open to all who wanted to join. Donated tents assured that the homeless and poor had an equal shot as their camping aficionado counterparts up the class chain … Continued

Port Shutdown gets attention of Target, Walgreens, JCPenny, Crate & Barrel

Rocky shores: Representatives from Target, Walgreens, J.C. Penney, and Crate and Barrel tell Oakland port commissioners and staffers they’re prepared to bypass the city – and ship all their overseas merchandise through Los Angeles – if the locals can’t control the Occupy situation. The reps point out that 40 percent of their imports come through Oakland, and say last week’s shutdown cost their companies hundreds of thousands of dollars in missed shipping deadlines. Any Port in a Movement: Pondering the Shutdown

By KATINSF  (reposted from http://democracy-sometime.blogspot.com) We shut down the Port of Oakland on Monday.  Activists in Long Beach, Los Angeles, Portland, Longview and San Diego also shut down their ports, or parts of them, for some or all of the day.  Activists in Houston did a solidarity action at their port and were tented – the fire department brought a big red tent to throw over them before – well, who actually knows what they did under there?  They said they did it in case they threw up sparks while … Continued

Time for the Hood to Occupy

Happening in Phoenix AZ: Bulletin: Police in small numbers continue to destroy or “confiscate” (Steal) private property at OccupyPhoenix and elsewhere. This is clearly the example of a police culture that intimidates and harasses the public trust. The Public Trust is not an organization nor a governing entity or a corporation, what this is: as it too has become corrupted and exploited to provide repression of class. (There are no Classes. In Equality.) The Public Trust is the People’s and the expectation that police serve the people by dedication to … Continued

Port Shutdown

I just sent this as a Letter to the Editor to the Oakland Tribune: What a mockery, the Port of Oakland purporting to be a “friend” of the 99%!  Using public lands, it hosts rent free the world’s largest maritime companies.  This includes war profiteers APL and SSA, the latter controlled by Goldman Sachs.  Not a penny of the nominal fees it charges them goes to the debt-ridden Oakland Public Schools nor to any of the vital services provided by Alameda County, including desperately understaffed Highland Hospital.  Yet the Port … Continued
