The Aftermath of #J28

I personally am a believer in non-violent civil disobedience and cannot imagine myself throwing rocks, startting fires or shouting “pig” at OPD or for that matter, any police. However, I have yet to face police in full riot gear well equipped with batons, tear gas, rubber bullets, flash bombs, etc. I, therefore, cannot say what I would do if I found myself in a situation where the police were bearing down on me and those near me. It must be a frightening experience and my heart goes out to every … Continued

NEED HELP – I’M AN ATTORNEY FOR OO POLITICAL PRISONER

I’m an attorney representing Ahimsa Govinda Windthunder, who was arrested in the mass roundup on 1/28.  I NEED VIDEO OR WITNESSES TO ASSIST IN HIS DEFENSE!  He is accused of throwing rocks at police, but he only threw harmless seed pods from a nearby tree.  Anyone who has video shot between 3-4 p.m. on 1/28, around the Laney College/Convention Center area please respond and I will make arrangements to view/copy it from you.  Unfortunately Mr. Windthunder is facing very serious charges that could easily land him in state prison based … Continued

What the hell, OO?

okay, i admit that <3 the girl from eugene<3 was cryptic, even for a haiku, but really? Youre just gonna delete it? I spent a solid hour and a half after getting home coming up with it. :'( And yes, i realize that was ALOT more time than most people would need to come up with a friggin haiku, but I’m mentally disabled for shit’s sake! I was just trying to document my affection for a girl who i had met at OO. :'( i hope youre proud of kicking … Continued

Lessons of J28

I’m not sure the world needs another analysis of Occupy Oakland Move-In Day, but that’s what you’re gonna get anyway. I’ve spent too much time obsessing about it for the past few days to let all that cogitation go to waste. So here goes. 1. The target. There’s general agreement that Occupy Oakland aimed a wee bit high with the selection of the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center as the movement’s new home. It’s tempting to think that OO knew all along that occupation would be an impossible task, but … Continued

Guy Fawkes and Occupy Movement

Hello, so I’m sure that these questions have probably been asked several times already, but I’m doing a bit of research on the importance of the Guy Fawkes mask (V For Vendetta) in the Occupy Movement and I’d like to know some of the opinions about how the mask as a symbol connects with the protesters and what it stands for by those who have worn it during the movement (is the mask (including the man(?) behind it) associated more along the lines of the abstract (for example, the mask means liberation, … Continued

Suggestion for rules of engagement during protests

This is just an idea for establishing some protocols so militants, pacifists, live streamers, and others can all function together more effectively during police conflicts. These rules would be described and agreed upon by all participants before each event, although organizers would be free to alter them depending on the nature of the event. The purpose would be to allow us to decide as a group how to respond to OPD actions during protests when there is no time for discussion or formal voting. If, during a confrontation with police, … Continued

Occupy Oakland and State Repression

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/01/31/occupy-oakland-and-state-repression/ January 31, 2012 47 Militancy and Counter-Insurgency Occupy Oakland and State Repression by MIKE KING A crowd of several hundred quickly swelled to a couple thousand, as Occupy Oakland attempted to occupy the vacant Kaiser Convention Center.  The goal was to use it as an indoor base for Occupy Oakland – a place to have General Assemblies and meetings, share food and get shelter for the winter.  This was in keeping with what Occupy Oakland has always done, a goal that is simple, though not simple enough for the … Continued

What If They Gave a F*** The Police March and No Police Came?

Photo by Dave Id As soon as I walked into work on Monday, everyone wanted to talk to me about Saturday’s events in Oakland, since I’m their only real link to the protesters. One woman told me about her father, a militant longshoreman. Another commented that Occupy Oakland seems more organized and less fringy than San Francisco. A guy had been upset by a report that the people committing “violence” – throwing things at the police, etc. – were members of Occupy and not “outside agitators.” I was embarrassed to admit … Continued

Media Incrimination of Occupy

In a SF Chron article published today (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/01/30/BAFG1N0MR2.DTL) there is a statement drawing Occupy Oakland into a tragic double murder. I was reminded of the article published last summer about the shooting at OGP where no initial information was published about the victim or perpetrators.  Instead it read like a verdict on Occupy Oakland.  I thought it might be helpful if people started posting “journalistic irregularities” as well as good articles. What do you think? 17272
