Draft proposal to be submitted re: Diversity of Tactics (feedback welcome!)

After attending the GA this evening and watching Friday’s on the livestream, following and contributing to the various discussions on the question of whether this is (or should remain) a nonviolent movement, and seeing a lot of strong feelings being voiced but not anything being done about it in a formal way, I decided to draft this proposal. It’s largely a rip-off of a really excellent Greenpeace blog post at http://www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/Blog/choosing-a-diversity-of-nonviolent-tactics/blog/12093/, which contains a lot of great additional information for those who are interested. What I think is important is … Continued

St. Paul principles would legitimize vandalism

I’ve had conversations with a couple people who tried to use these principles to justify vandalism in the last week and I personally believe that this proposal Monday is another attempt to do so . “1. our solidarity will be based on respect for a diversity of tactics and the plans of other groups.” This means we are supposed to respect the tactic of vandalism whenever they decide to smash up things and spray paint. I suggest instead that all tactics be specifically described and go through the GA. “2. … Continued

It tries to takes you here: http://www.occupyoakland.org/committees/supplysubcommittee/needed-supplies/ This is a broken link. Not sure how to report this better but it seems kinda important. Also the Donate button is hard to notice for some people. I suggest making it a tab on the main menu.   4364

not “we are winning” – please!

Ugh, not “we are winning.” Shades of Charlie Sheen (“winning“) and George Bush (“mission accomplished!”). It shows a lack of the necessary maturity and equanimity to move the world. The struggle has just begun. And it’s not about winning and losing. 4355

Writers Want to Read at Occupy

To the admins of the Occupy Oakland site/organizers of Occupy events: I’m a writer and an MFA writing student at California College of the Arts, in Oakland and SF. I’m a resident of Oakland and can’t always participate in the Occupy events because I’m busily working on my thesis, though I am watching the events and reading about them in the news and occasionally stop by Frank Ogawa, in awe of how amazing this is, how powerful this is, and how much we need this. Thank you, Occupiers!! I want … Continued

Money

I hope you will forward this around to all the folks who are organizing up in the camp.  Thanks in advance. Hi!  I came to the encampment yesterday and tried to talk to people about donating $20,000.  It was a difficult thing to do.  That’s ok, it means I spent a lot more time thinking about the money and that is probably important.  If you care about any of that reasoning: http://soggyinmilk.blogspot.com but it’s totally ok if you don’t want to read that. I would still like to donate money … Continued

Don’t just transfer, go cash!

Yesterday I suggested the movement consider organized bank runs as a non-violent but very effective means of protest against the banks and our would be masters. Today I am seeing evidence that this concept is gaining momentum, but with a twist to simply transfer money from the national banks, to local ones… this will not work! Please understand, the banking system is a huge network. They are all together, supporting each other. If one bank experiences a sudden loss, particularly from bank runs, the rest will support it. Think of … Continued
