Vigil at Oscar Grant Plaza Needs Support

There is an ongoing overnight vigil at Oscar Grant plaza. It’s been  very, very cold at nights, and folks are facing harassment by the Oakland PD resulting in continual loss of belongings, and a feeling of isolation. Please offer your companionship if you have time, and/or contribute these urgently needed items by bringing them down to the vigil: food (preferably hot) wool socks thermal long bottoms and tops hats blankets sleeping bags Laundry is also a challenge. If you know of an available washer/dryer that can be moved to the … Continued

End Corporate Rule

On January 21st there will be a rally in Sacramento to bring attention to the Citizen United Supreme Court Decision that money equals free speech. Corporate money in politicians’ pockets is the root of so many of our problems, including the most recent bill that allows American citizens to be detained in military prisons for indefinite amounts of time because someone decides s/he is a terrorist. I am seeking people to co-sponsor a proposal for Occupy Oakland to endorse this rally. There will be rallies nationwide.  As you know, the … Continued

City Council meeting

How many Occupiers are planning to attend and speak at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting? I have filled out the ‘speaker card’ that is available online, but it might be a good idea to determine our numbers in advance of the meeting. Does anyone know how many speakers they will allow prior to taking a vote? I’m assuming that, as this is the last item on the agenda,  the vote won’t be taken until 1 or 2 in the AM. I am certain this is by design but I intend … Continued

UNIONS NEED HELP NOW!

Hi, As the port blockade seems to be getting off to a good start I want to share a piece I wrote to counter the propaganda about the problems with the blockade hurting workers. At age 73 I’m able to appreciate the action to support unions being undertaken by Occupy Oakland and so many other Occupy groups up and down the west coast and beyond. Before I was born in Barre, Vermont, the granite center of the world, workers, including my grandfather, were dying of silicosis at early ages, caused … Continued
