BITTER LAKE, Part 1  By Adam Curtis Bitter Lake, Adam Curtis’ aesthetically sublime and politically incisive new documentary, was commissioned for BBC’s iPlayer because it is presumably, as Russia Today writes, “too dangerous for television.” After consuming the film by way of a 21st-century samizdat, I can tell you that the propaganda arm of the Kremlin is correct on one score: Bitter Lake is politically dangerous for Western states, especially the US and UK. But it’s also an affront to Russia, and virtually every other state that has attempted to force … Continued

The question of Berkeley police’s relationship with UASI has been moved from a Police Review Commission subcommittee to the full commission The question before the PRC is not whether to abrogate the BPD-UASI  relationship, but whether to add a rider calling on the city council to halt BPD participation in UASI-funded Urban Shield. The City has installed a bird sanctuary on the west side of the Lake, but it is not sufficient to make up for the displacement of the indigenous bird population by the relative newcomers, the Canadian geese, especially since several Canadian geese have taken up residence in and around the housing previously designated for native species. … Continued

The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a 1973 film based on the 1969 novel of the same name by Sam Greenlee. It is both a satire of the civil rights struggle in the United States of the late 1960s and a serious attempt to focus on the issue of black militancy. Dan Freeman, the titular protagonist, is enlisted in the Central Intelligence Agency’s elitist espionage program as its token black. After mastering agency tactics, however, he becomes disillusioned and drops out to train young Chicago blacks as “Freedom … Continued
