Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in a case called Citizens United vs. FEC. The Saving American Democracy Amendment states that: Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people. Corporations are subject to regulation by the people. Corporations may not make campaign contributions or any election expenditures. Studies show that we find it hard to criticize systems that we feel we depend on. Therefore, we should build up parallel systems to reduce our dependency on the systems controlled by and for the 1%. Shopping local, growing food, generating local energy can all help. Let’s agree that the current systems of government, finance, trade, health, environmental protection, energy and food production, etc. are all broken. One narrative of a fix is to reform the system from within. Another narrative which I think of as “revolution” suggests smashing all the systems and starting over. If I had to choose between just those two, I am personally inclined toward the first. Someone at a City Council meeting pointed out the other day that there are no 1%ers in Oakland, why are we protesting here? Well, I love my town and I want to see Occupy flourish and grow here, but it’s not a bad idea to branch out a little now and then. Why not march up to Piedmont park? I think we might find some 1%ers up there to take our message to. We will be dropping by the next GA to put this forward. 7100

About OccupyOakland.org

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.
