Stop using my city as your ideological playground

Categories: Announcements, Discussion

I understand that it takes 90% to pass a resolution at GA.  The most annoying part of this is that there is NO resolution that I have heard of that approves the violence (aka diversity of tactics). So, what we need to do is get those of us who want the violence to stop to show up at a GA and pass the resolution that the violent faction has been blocking.  Maybe we should pick a day to try and get the people out to one of these GA meetings.  Might actually give people a reason to care about OO again.

Proposal on ‘Action Agreements’

We Occupy Oakland believe in agreements that allow for a diversity of participants from the 99% needed to build a strategic mass movement that is radically inclusive and capable of standing up to and overthrowing the rule of the 1% and to advance an agenda of national and global political, economic and social systems and processes that meet human and ecological needs and not corporate greed;

We make agreements about how we take action together at our General Assemblies, beyond which individuals and groups are autonomous. We are not addressing here any philosophical or political requirements or judgements about the validity of some tactics over others, just minimal agreements to create a basis of trust to work together and participate in as diverse communities, to know what to expect from each other and consent to our involvement in and support of our actions.

Therefore, be it resolved that:

Occupy Oakland action participants agree not to engage in physical assaults against other people, except as one chooses in the case of self-defense or the defense of Occupy Oakland action participants or innocent bystanders from physical threats and assaults; and

Occupy Oakland participants agree not to engage in destruction or damage of physical property; and

Occupy Oakland shall not deem the following to be considered as property destruction or damage: measures taken to access, enter, maintain and/or physically secure vacant buildings, empty lots or other spaces such as public parks, so as to engage in or make habitable an occupation of such buildings, lots or public spaces; and

While Occupy Oakland recognizes that some individuals or groups may nevertheless engage in activities that are not in accordance with the above definition, those who do so will be acting autonomously and not in the name of Occupy Oakland.

I wonder what Amanita considers “the real work that needs to be done in our country.”

I’m pretty certain means mobilizing to vote for that uncommonly graceful stooge of Wall Street, the Pentagon, and the national security apparatus–Barack Obama.

Pony up with some specifics other than baseless ones directed against Oakland Occupy, Amanita.

The Occupation Movement is destroying Oakland’s economy?!?

That is a COMPLETELY baseless comment clearly uttered by someone who knows NOTHING about the trajectory of capitalism over the course of the past thirty years in general and the past four years in particular.

“the occupation is bleeding Oakland dry and accomplishing nothing, but destroying our economy”
You really need to cite your sources when you make assertions like that.
I could pick apart the rest of what you state as untrue (west Oakland is poorer than east!) but that one right there was the most egregious line of garbage.
btw I’ve lived here for 23 years, since just before the Quake in 89.

Oh, and closed comments on the anti-police marches? Where is our free speech?

Regardless of all the resolutions not to be a part of violence or destruction, the occupation is bleeding Oakland dry and accomplishing nothing, but destroying our economy. There is so much that needs to be done in this world and you are marching around, spouting rhetoric and accomplishing nothing but attracting publicity for yourselves and negative publicity for Oakland. The majority of you do not live or pay taxes in Oakland. You come here to play at politics. You are fooling yourselves if you think what you do is meaningful. It is a distraction from the real work that needs to be done in our country. The conservative right is making strides at restricting so many freedoms while you are wasting time and city resources in liberal Oakland. I notice you don’t hold General Assemblies in East Oakland, where our poorest and most disenfranchised citizens live.
