Moderation

Categories: Discussion, Open Mic

I find it curious that my comments about topics that aren’t spam are held in moderation for what seems to be hours on end with the explanation that the webmaster is trying to prevent spam from being posted while there are still tons of spam posts about shoes, clothes, etc. etc….

How is it that spam seems to get through moderation without a hitch and our posts about actual topics take time to post?

I’m not trying to be nasty here. It’s just strange…

Do any of the techies here have any suggestions for the webmaster that might be helpful? I’m not technical enough to provide any more assistance besides pointing out the obvious.

they need to ditch this weak ass Open Forum and use a real bulletin board type thing. i don’t know how that works, but I now that when I go to lots of different sites they have the same basic bulletin board style on all of them. Why re-invent the wheel?

Yeah, I know it’s technical. That’s why I posted an appeal for help for you guys. In the early days of the web I ran several discussion forums. It was hard work and long hours. I haven’t kept up with the latest technology so I’m not much more help than making a plea and empathizing with you.

We are working on a solution to the lag in comment moderation. Comment moderation was introduced to block spam not to discourage discussion.
We have been inundated with spam (e,g, 399 ugg boots ads in 1 hour). We have successfully blocked spambots on new postings. Volunteers are moderating the comments function but there are long periods where comments may not be visible. We hope to have this resolved soon. The web calendar is repaired.

NO COMMERCIAL POSTS ARE PERMITTED ON THIS SITE.

The web people are working on that. Suffice to say there are technical, not personal or political, reasons behind that. At least that is what a little bird told me when I said hey! What the fuck with all the spam little bird!

The reason that the discussion on this web-site is so stale is because it takes so long for posts to clear the moderators. I posted a comment in response to the short piece reporting that various retailers are threatening to ditch the Port of Oakland more than 18 hours ago and it is still awaiting the moderator’s clearance.

What I don’t understand is that “a_small_voice” was able to respond to another one of my comments (also made about 18 hours ago) only an hour after I posted it, but that same post is still awaiting a green-light from the moderators.

I think it’s a shame that this site is failing to encourage active discussion and debate on pressing issues (but allows right-wing conspiratorial garbage about North Korea to stay up indefinitely).

C’mon, as a movement, we can do better than this.
