Hi everybody, I’m Dave, I’m the guy who got up and gave the announcement for the LBL tonight about the movie night at the Grand Lake theater on 12/13. I don’t know the exact time yet, but it’s going to be on 12/13, the night after the Port shut-down, at the Grand Lake Theater and it looks like we’re going to be showing “V For Vendetta.” I’m not the one putting this together, but I’ll try and pass on details as they are known to me. I think it’s safe to assume that the dude who owns the Grand Lake theater continues to be totally badass (remember how he used to run anti-Bush slogans on his theater marquee in the mid 2000s?).
The profits from tickets are going to go to Occupy Oakland. I don’t know if it’s going to be “suggested donation” or an actual ticket price, again I’ll let you know. But I’m kinda excited about it, I mean we need some revenue streams with all the cash we’re spending on the Port action, and we need a warm place to gather from time to time, so hopefully this is going to be an ongoing thing. I want us to give a lot of love to the people responsible for making this happen (when we figure out who they are, lol!). And I open it up for discussion because I’m wondering what kind of movies we should be watching. Shit, I was the one talking about setting up a screen at Snow Park over a month ago…. but I don’t have a screen and I don’t have a projector. I’d love it if we can work in some film by ourselves, some of the documentation we’ve been doing of events here and elsewhere in the 99% movement, and also some documentaries about the economic situation, along with any kind of Hollywood stuff that people might enjoy seeing.
Feel free to post any ideas you have about this, I think it’s a cool happening and a great gift from our local business community (what’s left of it), and we should rap together so we can make the most of it.
Michael Moore often crosses the line into propaganda as well when he makes those no so ethical edits!
V for Vendetta is fun, but the history of Guy Fawkes is that he planned & failed to blow up parliament so that he could place a catholic monarch upon the throne. Is that what Occupy is about? No. Please choose a more appropriate movie such as ”Inside Job” it’s a good use of time for Occupy supporters to learn about economics and politics.
Have to look for that one, thanks. I still don’t know how often this will be happening or whether there is going to be much control over the movies. To me there’s all sorts of relevant movies.
I actually thought Margin Call was a snooze fest. Considering that its a move about major financial institutions overleveraging on securitized mortgage bundles. They only mention mortgage backed securities by name twice in the whole film. If you don’t already understand that whole swindle, Margin Call is not a good primer.
I would nominate Zeitgeist. Even though it is an imperfect movie in many ways, it also kind of prefigures the OWS movement significantly. There are a half dozen other very good films about the corruption and avarice that is business as usual in this country. Just please, not a Michael Moore film. His voice is so annoying!
You could show “Inside Job”. An academy Award Movie commented by Matt Damon on the financial crisis of 2008 , since that my friends is hopefully more of what the Occupy Movement is about.
I complied the important moments of the “V for Vendetta” movie here for the Occupy Movement of Oakland details…

Well, I haven’t yet seen it (it’s available on iTunes now) but the disparity goes back more than thirty generations, if you ask me. It’s a good thing you didn’t stand up and shout, though. We need to keep up appearances. Thanks.

Yeah, I saw “Margin Call” a couple weekends ago in Sacramento, at the old Crest theater. I like it, I could go for that as a movie we could show. I guess it’s going to depend on what movies they can get for us, you know? That one is recent so it could be more expensive. I liked it almost entirely, except towards the end when Jeremy Irons’ character is talking about disparity of wealth and he says, “It’s always been that way”, I wanted to shout out, “Hey, actually it’s twice as bad as it was 30 years ago!”
Have you seen Margin Call? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2DqFRsPrns
