This movement is restoring my faith in America

Categories: Open Mic, Reflections

I just want to say to everybody that was at the strike yesterday that you are fighting the good fight. A lot of people (some even in the movement itself) don’t understand exactly what the goals of this movement are. A lot of people are dismissing the movement as “a bunch of dead-beats” etc. I have seen this coming for at least ten years now. Occupy makes me proud to be an American again… something I’d all but lost sight of. I understand that there are a lot of different goals for this movement… things I have been thinking about for a very long time. It’s about time Americans woke up and started standing up for our rights as human beings.

There are certain things we need to be mindful of if we are to continue to be taken seriously as a political movement:

First… we need to minimize the violence and property damage. It does nothing but give the powers that be an excuse to dismiss us a fringe lunatics. I understand as much as anybody that it is getting harder to keep ones composure when we are getting stepped on by business leaders and our government, but its essential that we take the high road for as long as we can. Hopefully, if we make enough noise, we won’t have to resort to violence.

Second: We need to have a more focused set of goals that we can lay out to the powers that be. I am a long time (informal) student of politics and I know that a real direct message is important. There are a lot of problems with our system, but there are a lot of good things about it too. We need to look at what we can realistically get accomplished with this. We have our nation’s and our politicians’ attention now. The next step we take will be crucial in reaching our goals.

I hope that I’ve given readers some food for thought and something to discuss. Thank you all again for your dedication and keep fighting the good fight!
