“Recall Jean Quan”

Just a few thoughts, since I see that the movement to recall the mayor Jean Quan has some traction here. We have to think about this seriously for a second. We very well might end up with Ignacio De LaFuente as the mayor if we got rid of Jean Quan. That would be kind of like impeaching George W. Bush so that we could have Dick Cheney as President. Remember that conundrum? Also, we should keep in mind that the group of people who started this official Recall movement were actually upset at her for not cracking down harder on protestors and for not advocating a curfew against all the youth of Oakland. This is a group that I don’t think we need a coalition with. Sadly, I think our best tactic at this point is to use Jean Quan as much as we can and to make her dependent on us for support, instead of opposing her outright.

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.
