re: “violence” in the #OO movement and the Arab spring/Greek austerity movements

Let’s be careful not to compare ourselves too closely to those movements. They are totally different cultures, with totally different cultural values, and totally different sets of circumstances. One key difference is that those movements have broad support from the general population. #OO and #OWS do not yet have that kind of support. We are still in the process of earning that support from the mainstream masses, which is why I believe that now is not the time for a set of tactics that include property destruction and empty slogans like “destroy capitalism”. I think that those tactics will only serve to isolate us on the fringe.

I’d like to see a proposal that acknowledges these key differences, works to garner support from the mainstream masses before using a “diversity of tactics” that include property destruction (especially small business and non-targeted property destruction). Maybe this can be the compromise between the two factions that are forming in the OO movement.
