this is from a story in today’s new york times…Saying public safety remained her first priority, [Oakland] Mayor Jean Quan said in a statement, “We will not tolerate lodging on public property, whether in parks or open space; it is illegal.”
This is as opposed to all manner of illegal activity engaged in by government employees in Oakland, starting with the infamous police force, that they don’t mind tolerating at all.

It doesn’t make any sense to recall her.
First of all, the recall effort was begun by her opponents who said she wasn’t tough enough on crime. Which is 1%er speak for, “she isn’t willing to place a curfew on all the kids of Oakland.” And shit, I’m not a dewey eyed liberal. I’ve been jumped before in this town, I’ve lived here for almost 15 years. But Mayor Quan is a hell of a lot better than that other dude, De La Fuentes or whatever his name is. He’s a straight up nightmare. It would be like impeaching Bush to get Dick Cheney as the President.
We kind of suck at using Quan actually, since we won’t talk to her. I’d talk to her myself, but I’ve sent her some nasty letters and you know, personally I don’t give a shit about being her friend or whatever, but still we should have some diplomatic relations with them. It isn’t the U.S. and Iran.
