Black Friday

Categories: Open Mic

I was sorry to hear about the success of Black Friday, it feels like a 1% victory.  I stayed home, and don’t plan on buying anything this holiday season because, as usual, I can’t afford it.

I hate those words, that year after year I would have to tell my children that we could not afford what they wanted for Christmas and their birthdays, because we just could not afford it, and could not repeatedly put our family in debt to get those special gifts.

But you know that the children of the 1% most likely got what my kids wanted and then some!

Sad but true. I posted on facebook and a few other places, about the shooting and the stampedes and the people camping out for a week in mall parking lots — occupation much more violent than anything every contemplated by “Occupy”, but sanctioned by the State because it serves commerce. Hopefully I reached a handful of people with that message.

I was driving back from Thanksgiving vacation through Gilroy on Saturday. The outlet mall was packed. The traffic was backed up on 101 to and from the mall. And this was the day after Black Friday which was supposed to be the day to support small businesses on Main Street.

I detest the consumerist orgy that happens every year. Going to any store for just essentials becomes a disgusting experience from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Stores are packed. People are rude to one another. And people look miserable. The energy in the air is hostile.

When will we learn that worshipping at the temples of consumerism won’t make us happy? This is nothing but bread and circuses bought on credit. This is evidence that our corporate masters are still very much in control.
