The main argument I keep hearing in response to calls for a commitment to nonviolence goes something like this: Is breaking a window violent compared to throwing a tear gas canister at a protester’s head? Compared to banks foreclosing on whole neighborhoods? Compared to 16% annual increases in UC tuition? Compared to ______ [fill in the blank]? OF COURSE we are not equating breaking windows with breaking heads. To suggest otherwise is absurd and insulting. The argument is also a red herring, meant to distract from the main proposal, which … Continued

Green Party Mayor Welcomes Occupy Protests To Her City
Thursday, November 10, 2011 By Joe Garofoli, San Francisco Chronicle At least one Bay Area mayor is actually welcoming the Occupy Wall Street movement to her city: Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin. That’s good news because there will be an Occupy Wall Street speak out at 11 a.m. Friday near McLaughlin’s Civic Center Plaza office. People are invited to tell their stories of how they’ve lost their job, their home, can’t pay their student loans, can’t find a job, etc. Full story here. 5250
Be Proactive
The violence conversation is diverting a lot of useful energy. Of far greater import is what we DO stand for. Here is a beginning of a list. Please contribute your own. Occupy Oakland stands FOR justice. Occupy Oakland stands FOR feeding the hungry. Occupy Oakland stands FOR housing the homeless. Occupy Oakland stands FOR creating fairness in the world of commerce and production. Occupy Oakland stands FOR having every voice heard. Occupy Oakland stands FOR diversity of opinions. Letter from Oakland: Part 2
The second installment of David Lau‘s Letter from Oakland. Read Part 1 here. Only One Side Is Armed The fine tooth combs continue to run over Occupy Oakland’s general strike on Wednesday, November 2nd, its sequence of marches, port shutdown, and building occupation. News, however, is just now trickling out about military veteran Kayvan Sabehgi (two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan), currently recovering from surgery for a spleen lacerated by a beating police administered during his arrest early Thursday morning, November 3rd, near the occupied Traveler’s Aid building on 16th in downtown Oakland. As … Continued
Occupy Oakland at a Crossroads
by Mike King A section of the movement that calls property destruction violence, and doesn’t raise an eyebrow when “peaceful protesters” like themselves are viciously beaten and left in agony in a jail cell without medical attention for hours, is not in a position of moral authority to be dictating terms or holding people accountable. Or maybe they have the excuse that the corporate media feeding them this 100-year-old “violent anarchist” trope was not aware that the second veteran in a week from Occupy Oakland was undergoing major surgery after … Continued
Did OO Just Deposit $20k at Wells Fargo?
If so, I’m ashamed. I thought we’re asking people to move their money to local Credit Unions and local community based banks. If this is true, it makes us look like hypocrites. Also it makes us seem like we don’t care about Oakland since Wells Fargo engaged in some of the worst predatory lending in Oakland and now it refuses to make loans to local businesses to help Oakland’s economy. If it is true, we should remedy this right away by closing the account and then deposit the money at … Continued
Ability to Participate
Hi all…I’ve been to the OO GAs and events whenever possible, since the beginning. However, there are days I am unable to make it down there and I know there are people with the similar situation of being unable to physically/logistically make it downtown for a GA or for an event. What I am wondering though is if there is some way to allow participation for those who cannot make it down there to vote on proposals in person. Is there some sort of way we can submit a vote … Continued
