The Occupy Movement is demanding economic justice for a country that has never really ever seen economic justice in its history. To exacerbate an already inequitable situation, our political process is now legally capable of being bought. Our political process is subverted by the economic interests of ‘job creators’ and ‘We, the people,’ are being bought and sold by the very representatives that are meant to represent our interests. What Citizens United enabled is unlimited streams of money, individual or corporate, into the election playing field to adequately represent the viewpoints, via spending, of that particular interest.
It is going to take courage to demand a constitutional amendment to supersede the ruling of this Supreme Court decision. According to Constitutional Amendment 5, “whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution…” This is no small feat but it is possible if the will of the people demand it!
We, the people, must take back our political process and demand that our representatives pass a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a limit to campaign contributions. We must demand economic justice within our political process. We must demand a political landscape that is free from economic tyranny!
