Global Action Day Against the Use of Drones for Surveillance & Killing @ All around the World.
Oct 4 all-day

Listing of Actions.

Join the first Global Action Day Against the Use of Drones for Surveillance & Killing – October 4, 2014

As global citizens who believe in justice and the rule of law, we oppose weaponized and surveillance drones because their deployment:

  • violates democratic rights of freedom of speech and assembly and the right not to be unreasonably searched,
  • is used for extrajudicial “targeted” killings based merely on suspicion — murders — even of children inside and outside of war zones,
  • terrorizes populations in targeted territories, thereby fueling hatred and increasing the cycle of violence,
  • lowers the threshold to war and initiates a new round in the arms race,
  • leads to the development of autonomous killer robots, thereby making even more horrifying wars likely.

We demand that all governments cease the production and acquisition of armed drones, as well as their research and development, and work towards a worldwide ban of these weapons.

We further demand that our governments prohibit the use of drones for surveillance and prohibit using space satellites, ground stations, and military bases to enable drone surveillance and to trigger drone killings.

We call on people all over the world to join us in the Global Day of Action on October 4.

If you or your group are planning an action or event for October 4 and would like to post information about it on this website, please email a brief description to Anastasia of CODEPINK at anastasia@codepink.org.

The description may be in any language, but it is best to also include an English translation so that people around the world can read it.

Please include the address of your event, with the postal code, so that it will show up on the map.

You may also send for posting on the website a URL link or a PDF or JPEG attachment such as a photo, flyer, press release, or news coverage of your event.

#LeaveNoOneBehind Homelessness is NOT a Crime!!! World Homeless Day @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Oct 10 @ 8:00 am – 11:00 am

10/10/14 is World Homeless Day and as many cities criminalize peoples rights to exist, we feel it is necessary to rally in remembrance of those who have died on the streets from lack of shelter, to raise awareness for the need for more shelter as the upcoming winter approaches, and to put out a call to action to establish safe harbors if and when the city refuses to act.

Join us at 8am 10/10/14 at Oscar Grant Plaza (formerly known as Frank OGawa Plaza) 14th and Broadway, Downtown Oakland and let’s tell the world that we will #LeaveNoOneBehind

Church of Occupy

We will  march to Wiley W Manuel Court House, located at 661 Washington Street, Oakland CA. This march is to raise awareness to efforts across the bay area and the nation to criminalize homelessness with inhumane, uncompassionate, unconstitutional laws making it essentially illegal to exist. From “No Sit-Stand-Lie” ordinances to “No Camping” ordinances to the criminalization of sharing food, it is clear that there is war on the homeless and we promise to #LeaveNoOneBehind because Homelessness is NOT a Crime”.

Aaron Colyer, a formerly homeless, disabled, United States Marine Corps Veteran with PTSD was ticketed on July 24, 2014 for “Sleeping/Living in a Vehicle”. My Colyer was homeless at the time and was living in his van with his PTSD Service Dog Captain when Alameda Police violated his rights, threatened him with arrest, and essentially cited him with being homeless 500 yards away from the old Alameda Naval Station as seen in the following clip uploaded to YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1w3lZV91ak

The City Attorney has been asked to get the City Council to withdraw the ordinance in light of the June 19, 2014, United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, decision in Desertrain vs. City of Los Angeles, (No. 11-56957). In that case the Court overturned the City of Los Angeles’ ordinance banning use of vehicles as “living quarters”. The analysis set forth in Desertrain, applies to the City of Alameda’s ordinance as well.http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-homeless-vehicles-20140620-story.html

With our current economic situation and the ever increasing cost of rent and living in the bay area, more and more people are becoming homeless and/or living in their vehicles. As more and more states ban sleeping, camping, sitting, walking, sharing food and existing, Utah has taken a different approach, a Housing First approach.http://www.nationofchange.org/utah-ending-homelessness-giving-people-homes-1390056183 Instead of criminalizing homelessness, they are providing case management and housing and they are saving big bucks by doing so.

Barbara Thomas, former Vice Mayor and City Council Woman of Alameda City is representing Mr. Colyer and has scheduled a hearing for October 10/10/2014 at 9:00am in Department 102 at the Wiley W. Manuel Court House, 661 Washington Street, Oakland, CA this hearing was intentionally scheduled to coincide with World Homeless Day to raise awareness for the criminalization of the homeless and veteran homelessness. No one in America should be homeless, homelessness is NOT a crime and we will #LeaveNoOneBehind.

2nd Annual Gaza Solidarity 5K Walk/Run (San Francisco) @ Lake Merced Park (by SFSU)
Oct 18 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

2nd Annual Gaza Solidarity 5K Walk/Run (San Francisco)

Proceeds from the Gaza 5K Walk/Run will benefit UNRWA’s psycho-social support program for children in Gaza suffering from psychological trauma and PTSD due to the devastating crisis of July-August 2014 and the prolonged blockade. Many of these already vulnerable children have now lived through three traumatic rounds of violence, witnessing death, destruction, and displacement. It’s estimated that 375,000 children in Gaza now require immediate counseling.

These children need our support now, and that’s why your participation is so critical. Whether you participate as a sponsor, runner, walker, or cheerleader, we want to see you there!

By participating, you will directly support UNRWA’s psycho-social support program to provide these children with critically needed counseling services, offering them a safe space to express their emotions and fears, and the opportunity to work with trained counselors to learn valuable coping skills.

Lace up your running or walking shoes, bring your friends, your family, and even your pets and we’ll see you October 18th!
