Teachers Reception: “A Child’s View from Gaza”

Educators Reception “A Child’s View from Gaza” Friday, November 4, 4-6pm 917 Washington Street Oakland, CA –right around the corner! Refreshments will be served! We would like to invite you to a reception for teachers to see “A Child’s View from Gaza.” This is an exhibit of extraordinary art created by Palestinian children living in Gaza. The artists, who range in age from 7-14, all lived through Israel’s bombing and invasion of Gaza from December 2008-January 2009. The drawings express their feelings and understandings of that experience. This is an informal event, designed to … Continued

BLACK BLOC

According to Wikipedia, its a tactic relying on “vandalism, rioting and street fighting, demonstrating without a permit, misleading the authorities, assisting in the escape of people arrested by the police, administering first aid to persons affected by tear gas in areas where protesters are barred from entering, building barricades, and resisting the police”. For this 1% of the 99% movement to hijack majority of the press because of vandalism constitutes a HUGE threat to the legitimacy of this movement. Its supposed to be a MAINSTREAM movement for the people. When … Continued

Occupy, Have the Courage to Be Relevant

The Occupy Movement is the best chance in 40 years to establish a working class political agenda that benefits the majority. The impact of this movement is so strong that the Sacramento Bee (The Sacramento Bee!) is calling for policies that will actually cost banks money to help people keep their homes. But we stand right on the brink of squandering that chance for another generation. Ocupy needs to: 1. Keep all actions focused on big banks and the right wing, mostly within the Republican Party. Stop messing with Jean … Continued

The Way Forward

I honor and support the movement and the accomplishments made so far.  However, we risk the negative outcomes from idleness, boredom and frustration.  Incidence of vandalism will continue to be misconstrued by the media as mis-directed.  Several people yesterday at the action on the Port proposed that we take the fight to the legislature and congress at the state and national level.  In our world, words lead and define actions.  Cached here is a wiki constitution.  I have started it but have no claims from this point forward.  Anyone can edit, add, or … Continued

Black Blocs

I just wanted to put this out there: the people who are going around vandalizing/destroying things are employing a tactic called a Black Bloc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_bloc. http://www.crimethinc.com/texts/pastfeatures/blocs.php The first is an overview, and the second is an in-depth how-to description of it. I highly recommend you read both articles, particularly the second since it gives a good idea of Black Bloccers’ mentalities, but here’s a summary and interpretation for the lazy. It is essentially a loosely organized group of people who meet privately and prepare “actions” that range from showing simple solidarity … Continued

Suggestion to Prevent Violence and Increase Unity

I absolutely agree that we must prevent the small group of anarchists from “stealing the headlines” and preventing the rest of America from joining us.  I just sent the following email to Mayor Quan.   The General Assembly should approve our Leadership to approach Mayor Quan about this: Dear Mayor, I am a long-time formal Oakland resident, and frequent visitor.  I was a peaceful protestor and Port Marcher yesterday.  I support you Mayor, and sympathize with your position.  It is unfortunate that the headlines read that neither the Occupy Protestors nor Police … Continued

CLEAN UP OAKLAND DAY

There is a grim reality that Oakland is not the wealthiest city…to say the least. Yet, there are a lot of people in great need. Tax payers money is wasted on cleaning up after those who don’t really care about changing our city, but just want to make a scene. Our city is covered in trash and the vandalism of the few irresponsible citizens makes everyone look bad. I say we make a scene and a change by holding a “Clean Up Oakland” day. Taking back a city includes the responsibility that … Continued

GA must vote to disavow and eliminate violence/vandalism

All the hard work.  All the positive goodwill generated by yesterday’s peaceful action. All effectively erased from the public discussion due to the action of a handful of people lighting fires and vandalizing.  WTF!  This plays into the hands of the right wing fringe. I dont know what can be done since we are an inclusive movement.  But, at minimum, GA must vote to issue a statement disavowing the violence. No disrespect to our Anarchist friends, but we need to continue to build our base across the world, not let … Continued
