OccupyForum Presents

The Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP)
Housekeys Not Handcuffs

Because federal responses to homelessness have been so ineffective, a growing number of localities “clean up the streets” to remove homeless people from public view. These punitive measures involve gross human and civil rights violations. This nationwide pattern has escaped civil rights protections because these ordinances are drafted very carefully to appear as if they apply equally to all people. But enforcement is very much impacted by people’s skin color, housing, economic, and mental health status.WRAP’s civil rights campaign combines street outreach, documentation of civil rights violations, organizing, legal defense, and direct action. None of us can do this alone. We must work in solidarity with one another to defend those being attacked and pressure local governments to end these discriminatory programs. The WRAP Homeless Bill of Rights Campaign (HBR) strives to ensure that ALL people have the basic right to live where they choose without fear of harassment and criminalization.  Today, numerous laws infringe on poor people’s equal protection under the law. WRAP will introduce legislation in California, Oregon & Colorado to overturn local laws targeted to remove people from public space. Opposition from corporate, political, and law enforcement forces will be strong.  The base of support at the local level must be extensive.

The HBR campaign is more than an effort to pass state legislation. It is a way of working collectively with groups possessing different talentsto address the injustices that we face in our communities. Even if there isn’t an immediate victory, we are building the power to create a social justice movement that will eventually enable a more decent society.

Laws that segregate, that make criminals of people based on their status rather than their behavior, or that prohibit certain people’s right to be in public spaces are not just sad relics from the past: Today, numerous laws infringe on poor people’s ability to exist in public space, to acquire housing, employment, and basic services, and to equal protection under the law.

Our Homeless Bill of Rights Campaign (HBR) stands on the shoulders of social justice campaigns of the past to alleviate poverty and homelessness while protecting homeless and poor people from unjust laws and ensuring all people’s right to exist in public spaces. — WRAP

BAAQMD meeting to oppose crude-by-rail in Richmond

The Air Board staff has refused to rescind the permit of the Kinder Morgan crude-by-rail operations in Richmond. It has flatly denied appeals by the City of Richmond and numerous community groups, asking that this process be conducted through an open CEQA process, not through a closed-door ministerial action. Attend the next BAAQMD meeting and let the directors and staff know that the refusal to rescind the permit is unacceptable.

For background information, see the Judi Bari website. You may also want to read chapters from Steve Ongarth’s book, Redwood Uprising: The Story of Judi Bari and Earth First!, available on the book’s website.

March for Net Neutrality @ Comcast store
Feb 20 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

The Media Action Grassroots Network is leading a march for Net Neutrality in Berkeley outside of AT&T, VerizonRally Image and Comcast stores. This is a critical opportunity to stand up to Big Telecom: can we count on you to be there

The FCC will vote on Chairman Wheeler’s proposed rules on February 26. Between now and then, telecom lobbyists are going to do everything in their power to pressure the FCC to water down the rules.

If we remain silent, we run the risk that the FCC commissioners will cave to pressure and insert dangerous loopholes into the rules at the last minute. We need to make it clear to the FCC commissioners that we’ll have their backs if they follow through and pass strong rules by holding Big Telecom accountable on Friday in Berkeley . I hope you’ll be there.

Click here to RSVP for the march.

Thank you for fighting for the open Internet.

Defend OSHA Whistleblowers-Rehire Federal Attorney Darrell Whitman
Who Is Defending Workers Fighting For Our Health And Safety

EVENT: SF Press Conference And Rally

OSHA Federal Attorney Darrell Whitman is one of only 3 attorneys in the 9th Region of
OSHA protecting health and safety for whistleblowers. This region covers nearly 40 million
workers. Whitman has been fighting the systemic violation of the rights of OSHA
whistleblowers. He has challenged the systemic corruption in at OSHA and the DOL top
management which not only refuses to enforce the law but has allowed some managers to
falsify federal documents and illegally suppress the rights of whistleblowers.

This is not only a worker issue but the right of the public and communities to be protected
on the highways with trucks, on the railways, airlines, at oil refineries, nuclear plants and
even our health and safety in buildings and other work and industrial sites.

As a result of fighting for whistleblowers, Whitman himself has come under attack
being bullied and threatened for following the law. This press conference will report on this
case and also the connection to the workers and communities in the bay area and the
nation.

Berkeley Citizens’ Action and NAACP Black Lives Matter Forum @ South Berkeley Senior Center
Feb 21 @ 9:30 pm – Feb 22 @ 12:30 am

Come to a solution-oriented forum presented by
Berkeley Citizens Action with Berkeley NAACP.

The 2011 report from the African American/Black
Business, Professional and Community Network
(AABPCN) and the report from the 2013 Berkeley
NAACP Town Hall Meeting addressed inequities
and disparities for African Americans, low-income
populations and other marginalized groups in
Berkeley. They outlined numerous recommendations
for housing, education, employment,
criminal justice and health/mental health.

Also, CopWatch, the Peace and Justice Commission and
Police Review Commission all have solution-based
reports and/or council items that address some of
the same problems. Councilmember Jesse Arreguin
has several measures ready to present to council
and other council members are preparing items.

The purpose of our #BlackLivesMatter Forum is to
identify recommendations for action, first with
panelists, and then in breakout groups; to develop
an Action Plan which BCA and allied groups will
advocate for with politicians and political
candidates in the coming year.
