DSA General Membership Meeting @ Omni Commons Ballroom
Feb 25 @ 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

General Membership Meeting

The February general meeting is going to be a big one!

For one, we’ll be voting on whether or not to join the campaign to repeal the Costa-Hawkins Act, which severely restricts local governments in California from implementing rent control. See the text of the resolution.

We’ll also be voting on a major set of revisions to our Chapter’s bylaws! You can see the proposed revisions as well as a reader guide with some explanation for those proposed revisions.

And if you’d like to propose an amendment to those proposed bylaws, you can submit your own.

Democracy requires many hands, so please RSVP and volunteer. See you on February 25!

RSVP (and volunteer and get more information about venue accessibility and accommodations)

Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Feb 25 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall.  If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph.  If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.  (Note: we meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months,  once Daylight Savings Time springs forward we tend to assemble at 4 PM).

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

ooGAOO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Anti-War March Planning Meeting @ Niebyl Proctor Library
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Groups are forming to stage the first nation-wide anti-war protests in years. Save the date – April 15 for a march and rally in Oakland. If you are interested in helping, you can attend the next organizing meeting.

There are so many wars with US involvement that we become numb. “In 2013, the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) – one of thee nine organizational units that make up the Unified Combatant Command – had special operations forces (SOFs) in 134 countries, where they were either involved in combat, special missions, or advising and training foreign forces.” There is even greater involvement now, most likeley. It is kind of crazy that we are fighting wars in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and several African countries – not counting all the special operations units causing chaos everywhere. And it doesn’t seem to matter which political party has control of the white house – we are war mongers – so please plan to show up and voice your dissent.

The Oakland Green Party will hold its monthly meeting in Oakland’s Temescal District. All are welcome to attend. Please join our movement to recruit candidates to run for local offices, especially for City Council and School Board seats in Districts #2, #4, and #6 and connect with those working on Saied Karamooz’s campaign for Oakland Mayor.

The Oakland Greens are a local subgroup of the Green Party of Alameda County that is committed to a just and sustainable Oakland. Our principles are aligned with the ten key values of the Green Party of California, and we emphasize the need for a new system of preventing and addressing crime, with a focus on increasing opportunities for education and employment so that residents are not driven to crime out of desperation. The election process must also be extensively reformed so that the voices of all residents are heard.

The Oscar Grant Committee Against Police Brutality & State Repression (OGC) is a grassroots democratic organization that was formed as a conscious united front for justice against police brutality. The OGC is involved in the struggle for police accountability and is committed to stopping police brutality.

In alliance with the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) we organized the October 23, 2010 labor and community rally for Justice for Oscar Grant. On that day the ILWU shut down the Bay Area ports in solidarity. Our mission is to educate, organize and mobilize people against police and state repression. Sisters and brothers! The Oscar Grant Committee invites you to join us in this vital struggle.

We meet on the 1st Monday of each month

We document current events, make films together, steward an editing suite and share a film equipment library. Oakland Tenants Union monthly meeting @ Madison Park Apartments, community room
Mar 12 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

OTU’s Mission

The Oakland Tenants Union is an organization of housing activists dedicated to protecting tenant rights and interests. OTU does this by working directly with tenants in their struggle with landlords, impacting legislation and public policy about housing, community education, and working with other organizations committed to furthering renters’ rights. The Oakland Tenants Union is open to anyone who shares our core values and who believes that tenants themselves have the primary responsibility to work on their own behalf.

Monthly Meetings

The Oakland Tenants Union meets regularly at 7:00 pm on the second Monday evening of each month. Our monthly meetings are held in the Community Room of the Madison Park Apartments, 100 – 9th Street (at Oak Street, across from the Lake Merritt BART Station). To enter, gently knock on the window of the room to the right of the main entrance to the building. At the meetings, first we focus on general issues affecting renters city-wide and then second we offer advice to renters regarding their individual concerns.

If you have an issue, a question, or need advice about a tenant/landlord issue, please call us at (510) 704-5276. Leave a message with your name and phone number and someone will get back to you.

Medicare For All Open Strategy Meeting @ Niebyl Proctor Library
Mar 17 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

East Bay DSA hosted its first ever Medicare-for-All strategy meeting in February, where we generated ideas for tactics to expand our healthcare campaign. Now we’re hosting a follow up meeting to continue developing these ideas into actionable plans that can make us an even stronger force in the struggle to decommodify healthcare!

Please join us on March 17 to keep the momentum going as we develop specific tactical plans around four areas of interest that emerged at the first meeting.

  • Labor Outreach (e.g. presenting at union meetings, joint town halls)
  • Media Development (e.g. YouTube channel, Facebook, informational socialist reporting)
  • Direct Action (e.g. against debt collection agencies, putting pressure on capitalists and politicians in their neighborhoods)
  • Direct Community Services (e.g. Medicaid enrollment, volunteer at free clinics)

During the meeting, we’ll spend ample time in small groups devoted to each of these interest areas and then reconvene for a large group discussion and debate on them. Please be sure to fill out the RSVP to indicate what strategies you’re most interested in discussing! All are welcome, whether or not you were there in February. We’re so excited to continue developing these ideas with you on March 17!

The venue is wheelchair accessible, and you can contact Matt with any accessibility questions.
