The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 4 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we tend to meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months from November to early March after Daylights Savings Time.)

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 3 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Rally & Press Conference to Urge Vote to DEFUND Urban Shield

Join the Stop Urban Shield Coalition at the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting, where they will be voting on the Sheriff’s request to fund Urban Shield 2018. We are organizing to ensure they say NO! We want real, community-based preparedness for emergencies. Police militarization is not the answer.

We recently learned that Sheriff Ahern hosted ICE at the 2017 Urban Shield! We must turn out all our communities for this crucial vote. Alameda County must resist this blatant collusion with the horrific Trump and Sessions administration, and need to act on ending the racist tactics, and technologies being spread by Urban Shield.

It has only become clearer that Urban Shield does not provide disaster preparedness for the Bay Area. At the most recent Board meeting where AC Supervisors heard back from the Task Force assigned to evaluate Urban Shield, Sheriff Ahern demonstrated open disregard for the terms put in place by the Board to curb some of the program’s blatant racism and violence. Urban Shield clearly can not be reformed and must be defunded.

Take Action! Here’s how you can help.
Stop Urban Shield:

1) Come out on Tuesday, March 27th for our rally and press conference, and plan to stay so we pack the room during the Board of Supervisors vote on Urban Shield. The Board meeting starts at 11am and will likely go for a few hours. Please plan to stay a while or come late in order to make public comment if you can’t arrive by 10am.

2) Call and email the Board of Supervisors on Monday, March 26th. Here’s a sample script and their contact information that you can use:

Dear Supervisor _________, I am calling to urge you and your fellow Supervisors to take leadership in putting an end to the harmful and controversial Urban Shield program in Alameda County. On Tuesday, March 27th, you will be asked to decide whether to authorize funding for the Sheriff to hold Urban Shield in 2018.. By rejecting this, Alameda County can be a leader in prioritizing true community preparedness that is not based on fear and militarization. Despite your guidelines and community concerns, Sheriff Ahern has repeatedly demonstrated complete disregard for very serious concerns, most recently shown when he hosted both ICE and the Oath Keepers at last year’s Urban Shield. I urge you to take action by saying no to the authorization of any funding for Urban Shield. Thank you.

3) Spread the word! Let all the people in your networks know that with a powerful turnout and strong community pressure, we can end Urban Shield once and for all on March 27th.

On March 30, Israeli occupation forces murdered at least 13 Palestinians and injured more than 1,200. using live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and huge quantities of tear gas. The massive protests in cities across Gaza — the world’s largest open-air prison — were held on Land Day and were the start of a six-week long mobilization leading up to al-Nakba Day, May 15, which commemorates the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 to make way for the state of Israel. The protest is called the Great March of Return, and demands that the expelled Palestinian be allowed to return to their land.

The Israeli occupation forces, while attempting to turn reality upside down by claiming to have been acting in “self-defense,” reported suffering zero casualties.

How can a public bank help relieve the burden of student debt that so many of us are struggling with? Come hear the progressive candidate for CA lieutenant governor, Gayle McLaughlin, discuss this question on Monday, April 9, in Richmond’s main library. The library is just .6 miles from the Richmond BART station. All are invited to attend this free event and take part in the conversation.

Study deadline nears

On March 31, Global Investment Corporation (GIC) is scheduled to submit to the city their study on the feasibility of the Public Bank of Oakland. Watch for news of the study in our next edition, coming soon!

PBO governance plan

Some of us at FPBO have been busily working on a proposed governance plan for our future bank. Two weeks ago, at the Public Banking Institute’s conference in Colorado, our own Susan Harman presented an outline of this plan. The final version of our proposed governance plan will be ready in early April.

Public banking beyond Oakland

•  San Francisco’s Municipal Bank Feasibility Task Force met for the first time in late February. The task force, headed by SF Treasurer José Cisneros, has now issued a Request for Qualifications on a financial study of a public bank for the city.
�  Seattle is the latest city to explore the public banking ooption. The city has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a Seattle Public Bank feasibility study. Read more here.
�  Two representatives in the Alaska legislature have proposeed a bill creating a public Bank of Alaska. Read more here.

Most of us fall into debt because we are increasingly deprived of the means to acquire the basic necessities of life: health care, education, and housing. Because we are forced to go into debt simply in order to live, we think it is right and moral to resist it.

In the wake of Bay Area ICE raids, the feds suing California, and a shutdown of CIVIC’s weekly visits to detainees, join the community circle to protest at Richmond’s West County Detention Center (WCDF)! Those detained right in our midst are our loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, and classmates. The impact of these racist, cruel separations has enormous economic and social impact on our communities. And the same is true for the general population in jail, who are also unfairly criminalized and detained for lengthy periods before trial.

LET OUR PEOPLE GO is a youth-and-elder-friendly action that opposes the immorality of detentions/deportations and mass incarceration with activist debriefs, music, art, stories, poetry, interactive small groups, and representation from various faith communities and faithless humanists. Accessible site with parking, plus bathrooms right inside in the visitors waiting room.

The monthly Let Our People Go protests were initiated by members of Kehilla Community Synagogue on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 11am, modeled in part on the first Saturday vigils held by our partners at Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. A grassroots effort, Let Our People Go is organized by volunteers from Kehilla’s Immigration Committee. The ongoing participation from Bend the Arc Bay Area Solidarity activists, Congregation Beth El, and other regular attendees is what creates a powerful community circle, a sustained message of resistance to the powers that lets detainees and their loved ones know that estamos en la lucha con ellos. **If your school, network, affinity group or congregation is interested in getting involved, contact us at letourpeoplego@kehillasynagogue.org.**

A one-hour protest, Let Our People Go is a way for our communities—especially those with citizenship privileges—to stand up for our peoples and bring more attention to this immoral site of internment right in our community. We are planning for a Tuesday May 1 march and rallies gathering at noon at the Oakland Matson Terminal  (near the end of the Adeline viaduct) and marching to Oscar Grant Plaza to join the 3pm Oakland Sin Fronteras rallies and march.

OTU’s Mission

The Oakland Tenants Union is an organization of housing activists dedicated to protecting tenant rights and interests. OTU does this by working directly with tenants in their struggle with landlords, impacting legislation and public policy about housing, community education, and working with other organizations committed to furthering renters’ rights. The Oakland Tenants Union is open to anyone who shares our core values and who believes that tenants themselves have the primary responsibility to work on their own behalf.

Monthly Meetings

The Oakland Tenants Union meets regularly at 7:00 pm on the second Monday evening of each month. Our monthly meetings are held in the Community Room of the Madison Park Apartments, 100 – 9th Street (at Oak Street, across from the Lake Merritt BART Station). To enter, gently knock on the window of the room to the right of the main entrance to the building. At the meetings, first we focus on general issues affecting renters city-wide and then second we offer advice to renters regarding their individual concerns.

We’ve all seen the video! How is it that BART police officer Joseph Mateu has not already been charged with the murder of Sahleem Tindle, after he shot the 28 year old in the back three times? Join us to demand that Nancy O’Malley do her job and charge and prosecute Mateu for murder. O’Malley has yet to prosecute a single killer cop. It’s time to break that unjust record!

The family asks that people wear white for this action.

Sahleem Tindle was murdered by BART Police Officer Joseph Mateu on January 3, 2018. He is now back on the job, after only a two week leave. The family demands: fire, arrest, charge and prosecute Joseph Mateu!
