Matt Gonzalez, former SF supervisor and current attorney for Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez (immigrant accused of murder in the Pier 14 shooting) will join Mujeres Unidas y Activas to talk about contemporary immigration issues. What is at stake for immigrants rights in our community? What do we need to know about sactuary cities policies? What should we do in order to retain them? How the right-wing media is using this case for political revenge.
Please join Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant at a rally in Oakland for her re-election campaign! Mark your calendar now!
NEW! Richmond City Councillor and former Green Mayor, Gayle McLaughlin to speak alongside Kshama at this event!
From the streets of Baltimore to the growing movement for a $15 minimum wage, consistent protests are erupting against the endemic inequality and racism generated by Wall Street and their social system. With growing anger at the corporate policies of both main political parties, millions are looking for an alternative.
Since her election in 2013, Councilmember Sawant has led the opposition to the corporate agenda in the Pacific Northwest. An unapologetic fighter for working people, she refuses all corporate donations and accepts only the average worker’s wage, giving the rest of her salary back to social movements. Despite being a city councilmember, she has risked arrest in order to stand with workers fighting for a living wage in Sea-Tac and environmentalists blockading coal trains. Her re-election will inspire more oppressed people to fight for our rights, and it will prove again that it is completely possible to elect candidates who reject corporate cash.
Kshama Sawant has inspired movements across the country. That is why corporations across the country are funding her opponents’ campaigns. We in the Bay Area absolutely need to support her historic re-election. She cannot get re-elected without our active support. Mark your calendar, invite your friends, and join us at this rally and fundraiser!

The big banner and new placards will put attention on the horrendous noise at Pelican Bay SHU 24/7, caused by the ‘wellness checks’.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION = TORTURE
The architecture of the SHU at Pelican Bay amplifies the slamming of the pod doors, the guards clambering up and down the tiers as well as the beeper and wand action by guards. The interpretation of these wellness checks by Pelican Bay staffers is unacceptable. Turn out to hear the latest and sign up for our emergency response network.
Flying Over Walls will be hosting their Oakland LGBTQ+ Prisoner Letterwriting Night again in conjunction with Statewide Coordinated Actions To End Solitary Confinement – and discussing the recent Ashker v. Governor of California settlement, including what it means and what we are still fighting for.
As the SF Bay Area chapter of Black & Pink, our focus is to connect the non-incarcerated LGBTQ+ folks who participate in our events to B&P members in Northern California prisons.
Film evenings begin with optional potluck refreshments & social hour at 6:30 pm,
followed by the films at 7:30 pm, followed by optional discussion after the films.
WE THE TINY HOUSE PEOPLE By Kirsten Dirksen
For a detailed description of this film, see this website.
This is journey into the tiny homes of people searching for simplicity, self-sufficiency, minimalism and happiness by creating shelter in caves, converted garages, trailers, tool sheds, river boats and former pigeon coops.
Basically, Dirksen made a documentary on people living in tiny houses. For around five years she was traveling the world and filming these segments.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch is quietly coming to Richmond City Hall this Friday.
Once again, despite evidence, witnesses, and a video of the shooting, the police killing of an unarmed man has been ruled a justifiable homicide and will not be investigated. This is unacceptable! We need police accountability now!
Lynch has tuned out the pleas of the people for police accountability. The parents of Pedie Perez, an unarmed man who was killed by Richmond PD last September, are asking for your help.
The Oscar Grant Committee in solidarity with the Perez family, is organizing a rally in front of the Richmond City Hall on Friday. Let us speak up loud and clear demanding justice for Pedie and all those whose lives have been stolen by police terror!
#Justice4Pedie #EndPoliceTerrorNow
New time!!! 12:15pm Today!
OGC Members and Supporters,
It appears the USAG will begin speaking with reporters at 12:45pm, a revised timeline, so it is probably best to arrive at the Civic Center Plaza no later than 12:15pm tomorrow (Friday, 9/25).

Felix Hunziker: Protesting For Citizen’s Rights and Justice
POSTED BY FELIX HUNZIKER 13SC ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2015
This Friday, September 25, will be a remarkable day in Richmond. US Attorney General Loretta Lynch is visiting to observe and commend local officials on efforts to build bridges between the community and our police department. And rightfully so, since we have made much progress since the bad old days of the Richmond Cowboys
The truly remarkable part, however, is that these same officials will then return to their desks at City Hall and continue to ignore and unlawfully block pleas from the family of Richard “Pedie” Perez for an independent investigation into their son’s death at the hands of a Richmond police officer.
Real trust and transparency means putting the rights of the community first but all our Mayor, City Attorney, and others appear interested in is protecting the City from liability. A Police Commission investigation represents unwanted exposure for a city already dealing with a federal lawsuit. As a member of that Commission I couldn’t care less about the legal risk to our city, all I care about is that both police officers and citizens receive a fair, impartial investigation when breakdowns or mistakes happen.
I’m pro-citizen. I’m also pro-cop. A young man is dead. I have no idea if Pedie Perez’s death was justifiable or not but I do know our City has blocked his family’s right to an independent investigation. That’s what I’m going to protest at City Hall tomorrow at 12:15 PM. I hope you’ll join me.

The Canadian government has threatened Montreal, Maine and Atlantic engineer Thomas Harding and traffic controller Richard Labrie with life in prison as scapegoats for the Lac-Mégantic oil train disaster. Jeff Powers of the SWP will lead a discussion about the real causes of the disaster on July 26, 2013 where a MMA train derailed, destroying the downtown and killing 47 people.
Crew size reduction, long hours with little time for rest, and poorly maintained track, bridges and rolling stock all play important roles in the Lac-Mégantic catastrophe, but the Canadian government is framing two individuals instead of investigating the real causes and vigorously prosecuting the corporations responsible.

Sponsored by the Stop Urban Shield Coalition
Hundreds of people carried out powerful theater in the streets and a rally in downtown Oakland on September 11, protesting ‘Urban Shield’ – a regional police militarization exercise, war equipment expo, and SWAT team competition.
This is the third year that a broad community coalition has mobilized to resist this militarization that is part of the violence, oppression and trauma of communities of color and others impacted by state violence. Last year, the coalition successfully pressed Oakland to disinvite Urban Shield from having the expo in downtown Oakland; this year Pleasanton hosted the expo. More than ten thousand people signed a petition to the Alameda Board of Supervisors to stop Urban Shield, which is funded by the Department of Homeland Security and run by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department.
This Saturday, join us for a lively report on this year’s events and discussion of how to continue to resist and end these militarization exercises in our area. The discussion will be led off by Woods Ervin of the TGI Justice Project and John Lindsay-Poland of American Friends Service Committee.
This event will be held in a space with posters created by artists from around the country in response to militarization of police, borders, in wars, and on alternatives, called #HumanizeNotMilitarize, sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee.

Francisco Herrera and Ross Mirkarimi:
Addressing the Needs of the People
Francisco Herrera is a musician, a long-time Green Party member, and an activist with the Living Wage Coalition. He is running for Mayor in order to “bring the wisdom of the neighborhoods to City Hall.” Francisco has developed a 12-year plan for getting SF back to meeting the needs of the people who live here. And he has done this with over 200 residents’ input. In a speech to the League of Women Voters, he asked: “How do we get City Hall to listen to the wisdom of our neighborhoods and respect our strengths? What kind of city do we want for our children and grandchildren — for ourselves?”
Francisco started the “People’s Campaign” to form a long-term effort to develop a plan and vision of San Francisco as a city friendly and affordable to working families. Francisco’s platform includes building more affordable housing, eviction protection, a budget that prioritizes arts and human services, safe streets and a better Muni system, public education, an expansion of Healthy SF, an end to deportations and cooperation with ICE, accountable policing, and more living wage jobs.
Herrera has been endorsed by Jill Stein (Green Party US Presidential Candidate 2116), the Green Party, the Peace and Freedom Party, the Tenants’ Union, SF supervisor John Avalos, former Calif. Assembly member Tom Ammiano, SF Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, SEIU Local 1021, and AFT Local 2121, and many SF labor unions. You can find out more at: http://www.peoplescampaign.net/platform
R O S S M I R K A R I M I
Ross Mirkarimi has succeeded in lowering the costs for inmates to stay in touch with their families by phone (a key factor in lowering recidivism). He has supported Five Keys, an award-winning high school inside the jail. Mirkarimi has increased visiting hours for all inmates, and houses transgender inmates according to gender identity. He also helps enroll inmates in Obamacare when released from jail. Sheriff Mirkarimi has made some good decisions that have put him at odds with Mayor Lee. He has strongly supported SF’s “sanctuary city” policy, which allows undocumented immigrants to cooperate with law enforcement without fear of deportation. Mirkarimi is also is the only Sheriff in the state to have an Eviction Assistance Unit, which protects tenants and slows evictions. This assistance, while short of an outright refusal to evict (which would result in Lee suspending Mirkarimi), has put Mirkarimi at odds with landlords and developers. The Green Party strongly endorses Ross Mirkarimi for another term as Sheriff.
Refreshments. 6-6:30 meet and munch. 6:30-9 Herrera and Mirkarimi Q & A and your input. Donations greatly appreciated. No one turned away. No money ever accepted from corporations… ever. From civic center BART come up escalator to UN Plaza and walk straight thru the plaza to Hyde St. Turn right on Hyde and walk 2 short blocks to Golden Gate. Turn right and walk to middle of the block to 215.
