Rally & Press Conference to Urge Vote to DEFUND Urban Shield

Join the Stop Urban Shield Coalition at the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting, where they will be voting on the Sheriff’s request to fund Urban Shield 2018. We are organizing to ensure they say NO! We want real, community-based preparedness for emergencies. Police militarization is not the answer.

We recently learned that Sheriff Ahern hosted ICE at the 2017 Urban Shield! We must turn out all our communities for this crucial vote. Alameda County must resist this blatant collusion with the horrific Trump and Sessions administration, and need to act on ending the racist tactics, and technologies being spread by Urban Shield.

It has only become clearer that Urban Shield does not provide disaster preparedness for the Bay Area. At the most recent Board meeting where AC Supervisors heard back from the Task Force assigned to evaluate Urban Shield, Sheriff Ahern demonstrated open disregard for the terms put in place by the Board to curb some of the program’s blatant racism and violence. Urban Shield clearly can not be reformed and must be defunded.

Take Action! Here’s how you can help.
Stop Urban Shield:

1) Come out on Tuesday, March 27th for our rally and press conference, and plan to stay so we pack the room during the Board of Supervisors vote on Urban Shield. The Board meeting starts at 11am and will likely go for a few hours. Please plan to stay a while or come late in order to make public comment if you can’t arrive by 10am.

2) Call and email the Board of Supervisors on Monday, March 26th. Here’s a sample script and their contact information that you can use:

Dear Supervisor _________, I am calling to urge you and your fellow Supervisors to take leadership in putting an end to the harmful and controversial Urban Shield program in Alameda County. On Tuesday, March 27th, you will be asked to decide whether to authorize funding for the Sheriff to hold Urban Shield in 2018.. By rejecting this, Alameda County can be a leader in prioritizing true community preparedness that is not based on fear and militarization. Despite your guidelines and community concerns, Sheriff Ahern has repeatedly demonstrated complete disregard for very serious concerns, most recently shown when he hosted both ICE and the Oath Keepers at last year’s Urban Shield. I urge you to take action by saying no to the authorization of any funding for Urban Shield. Thank you.

On March 30, Israeli occupation forces murdered at least 13 Palestinians and injured more than 1,200. using live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and huge quantities of tear gas. The massive protests in cities across Gaza — the world’s largest open-air prison — were held on Land Day and were the start of a six-week long mobilization leading up to al-Nakba Day, May 15, which commemorates the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 to make way for the state of Israel. The protest is called the Great March of Return, and demands that the expelled Palestinian be allowed to return to their land.

The Israeli occupation forces, while attempting to turn reality upside down by claiming to have been acting in “self-defense,” reported suffering zero casualties.

Summit presenters and participants will discuss interrelated topics such as jail construction, gang injunctions, justice for community members murdered by police, tasers, bail reform, increased policing on our streets, and more. Interactive workshops, trainings, and panel discussions will allow for participants to share information and strategize between campaigns. In the wake of Bay Area ICE raids, the feds suing California, and a shutdown of CIVIC’s weekly visits to detainees, join the community circle to protest at Richmond’s West County Detention Center (WCDF)! The monthly Let Our People Go protests were initiated by members of Kehilla Community Synagogue on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 11am, modeled in part on the first Saturday vigils held by our partners at Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. A grassroots effort, Let Our People Go is organized by volunteers from Kehilla’s Immigration Committee. West Oakland residents will get the results of three recent air monitoring studies  and discuss how to use this information and local knowledge to push for a truly comprehensive plan that minimizes air pollution in our neighborhoods.

The three studies were done in connection with a new Truck Management Program for West Oakland. The workshop will cover 100 x 100 air monitoring sensors placed throughout West Oakland; EDF/Google air mapping; and a study analyzing why filters on trucks are not working effectively at the Port of Oakland. The results of these studies will inform attendees of scientific findings about how black carbon — the main component of soot emitted from diesel engines, wood smoke, and other sources — varies throughout West Oakland.

Workshop participants will work together to set priorities and recommend ways that this information and residents’ local knowledge can inform the City and the Port of Oakland to produce a truly comprehensive plan that minimizes air pollution in our neighborhoods.

Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Cohn, the former president of the National Lawyers Guild and criminal defense attorney, is a legal scholar, political analyst, and social critic, who is also editor and contributor to Drones and Targeted Killing: Legal, Moral, and Geopolitical Issues.

Lisa Hajja, professor of sociology at the University of California Santa Barbara, with courtesy appointments in Global and International Studies, and Middle East Studies, is a contributor to Life in the Age of Drone Warfare.  Her work focuses mainly on issues relating to law and conflict, military courts and occupations, human rights and international law, and torture and targeted killing.

Lisa Ling, a former technical sergeant in? the U.S. Air Force, is featured in the heralded documentary National Bird, which, according to The Washington Post, is “artful, profoundly unsettling.” In an article for The Guardian (http://bit.ly/2EoYdOU), Ling noted how little the public knew about the U.S. drone program and its consequences.

JP Morgan Chase bank, one of the biggest investors in tar sands, increased its tar sands investments by nearly $6 billion last year — and also increased its investments in coal. Join a local rally as part of a nationwide day of action to #ShutDownChase.

Monday May 7 is the annual shareholder meeting for TransCanada, the company trying to build the KXL pipeline.  Climate defenders are working to stop the KXL pipeline and keep tar sands in the ground with a three-prong strategy:

1. Mass mobilization with the Promise to Protect: Building and igniting a grassroots movement ready to follow the leadership of Indigenous people along the route if TransCanada moves forward.
2. Financial targets: Going after banks, like JP Morgan Chase, who are financing Keystone XL and other dirty fossil fuel projects, can cut off the funding necessary to build these dirty projects. Momentum is growing with the international bank HSBC’s commitment to drop nearly all holdings in tar sands, coal, and arctic drilling last week.
3. Legal action: Fighting TransCanada every step of the way in the courts at the state and federal level.

The national day of action to shut down Chase, hosted by Rainforest Action Network, is part of this strategy.

50 years ago, Dr. MLK Jr. started the Poor People’s Campaign to spark a radical revolution of values across the nation. The campaign was intended to turn his dream, our dream, into a reality. Black, Brown, Yellow, Red, White, folks of every color where invited to band together across differences to build a Beloved Community across the nation. Weeks before the Campaign, King was assassinated. The original movement was unable to come to fruition.

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is picking up where the movement stopped in 1968. Join us for our third week in a SEASON OF NONVIOLENT MORAL DIRECT ACTION. America is in a crisis of values. We must take nonviolent radical action to stand for the dignity of all people in our nation and around the world.

In the third week, we are focusing on the deep violence of The War Economy, American Militarism, the Mistreatment of Veterans, and the Proliferation of Gun Violence. 8:30am-9am: Arrive Sign-up for Nonviolent Moral Fusion Direct Action and support role training @ Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N St, Sacramento 95814. If you are participating in Nonviolent Moral Fusion Direct Action, or supporting as a Marshal, Medic or Peacekeeper you must join this training. (even if you have already been trained!)

9:00am-12:00pm: Final Training for everyone planning on participating in the Direct Action or as a Marshal or Peacekeeper.

12:00pm-2:00pm: Set-Up & Learning Songs (anyone who wishes to volunteer is welcome to meet up at the volunteer tent on the Capitol steps to help set-up)

2:00pm: Rally and Press Conference on West Steps

3:00pm Demonstration.
