WE CAN END URBAN SHIELD! All Out to Stop Militarized Policing in the Bay Area @ Alameda County Administration Bldg
Mar 27 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Rally & Press Conference to Urge Vote to DEFUND Urban Shield

10am – Rally & Press Conference
11am – Supervisors Meeting & Urban Shield Vote

Join the Stop Urban Shield Coalition at the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting, where they will be voting on the Sheriff’s request to fund Urban Shield 2018. We are organizing to ensure they say NO! We want real, community-based preparedness for emergencies. Police militarization is not the answer.

We recently learned that Sheriff Ahern hosted ICE at the 2017 Urban Shield! We must turn out all our communities for this crucial vote. Alameda County must resist this blatant collusion with the horrific Trump and Sessions administration, and need to act on ending the racist tactics, and technologies being spread by Urban Shield.

It has only become clearer that Urban Shield does not provide disaster preparedness for the Bay Area. At the most recent Board meeting where AC Supervisors heard back from the Task Force assigned to evaluate Urban Shield, Sheriff Ahern demonstrated open disregard for the terms put in place by the Board to curb some of the program’s blatant racism and violence. Urban Shield clearly can not be reformed and must be defunded.

Take Action! Here’s how you can help.
Stop Urban Shield:

1) Come out on Tuesday, March 27th for our rally and press conference, and plan to stay so we pack the room during the Board of Supervisors vote on Urban Shield. The Board meeting starts at 11am and will likely go for a few hours. Please plan to stay a while or come late in order to make public comment if you can’t arrive by 10am.

2) Call and email the Board of Supervisors on Monday, March 26th. Here’s a sample script and their contact information that you can use:

Dear Supervisor _________, I am calling to urge you and your fellow Supervisors to take leadership in putting an end to the harmful and controversial Urban Shield program in Alameda County. On Tuesday, March 27th, you will be asked to decide whether to authorize funding for the Sheriff to hold Urban Shield in 2018.. By rejecting this, Alameda County can be a leader in prioritizing true community preparedness that is not based on fear and militarization. Despite your guidelines and community concerns, Sheriff Ahern has repeatedly demonstrated complete disregard for very serious concerns, most recently shown when he hosted both ICE and the Oath Keepers at last year’s Urban Shield. I urge you to take action by saying no to the authorization of any funding for Urban Shield. Thank you.

Supervisor Haggerty // josh.thurman@acgov.org (510) 272-6691
Supervisor Valle // cinthya.munozramos@acgov.org (510) 272-6692
Supervisor Chan //dave.brown @acgov.org (510) 272-6693
Supervisor Miley // kamika.dunlap@acgov.org (510) 670-5962
Supervisor Carson // shahidah.lacy@acgov.org (510) 272-6695

3) Spread the word! Let all the people in your networks know that with a powerful turnout and strong community pressure, we can end Urban Shield once and for all on March 27th.

Emergency protest of Israeli massacre in Gaza @ UN Plaza, Civic Center Bart
Mar 31 @ 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm

On March 30, Israeli occupation forces murdered at least 13 Palestinians and injured more than 1,200. using live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and huge quantities of tear gas. The massive protests in cities across Gaza — the world’s largest open-air prison — were held on Land Day and were the start of a six-week long mobilization leading up to al-Nakba Day, May 15, which commemorates the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 to make way for the state of Israel. The protest is called the Great March of Return, and demands that the expelled Palestinian be allowed to return to their land.

The Israeli occupation forces, while attempting to turn reality upside down by claiming to have been acting in “self-defense,” reported suffering zero casualties.

Join us to protest this latest atrocity by the Israeli occupiers and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Emergency Protest! Secretary of War Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis Speaking in SF @ Parc 55 Hotel
Apr 7 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
U.S. troops are fighting in seven countries and deployed in more than 100. The already huge military budget is being vastly expanded, with trillions of dollars projected to be spent on newer, more “usable” nuclear weapons.

At the same time, a McCarthyite hysteria has been created against Russia, intended to prepare the people here for new and extremely dangerous provocations against that country. Overseeing the huge military build-up is Secretary of “Defense” James Mattis, who will be speaking in San Francisco on Sat. April 14. Join us to say;

– No new war against Korea or Iran – End all U.S. wars around the world!
– Shut down all foreign bases & Bring all troops home!
– End the anti-Russia hysteria before it leads to war!!
– Stop the nuclear weapons build-up!
– Fund healthcare, housing, schools & jobs, not militarism!

Protest at Richmond Jail / Immigrant Detention Center @ West County Detention Facility
Apr 8 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

In the wake of Bay Area ICE raids, the feds suing California, and a shutdown of CIVIC’s weekly visits to detainees, join the community circle to protest at Richmond’s West County Detention Center (WCDF)! Those detained right in our midst are our loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, and classmates. The impact of these racist, cruel separations has enormous economic and social impact on our communities. And the same is true for the general population in jail, who are also unfairly criminalized and detained for lengthy periods before trial.

• HEAR samba band Sistah Boom
• GET UPDATES from families of detained folks
• SHOUT with the Let Our People Go community circle
• AND MORE TO BE ADDED SOON

LET OUR PEOPLE GO is a youth-and-elder-friendly action that opposes the immorality of detentions/deportations and mass incarceration with activist debriefs, music, art, stories, poetry, interactive small groups, and representation from various faith communities and faithless humanists. Accessible site with parking, plus bathrooms right inside in the visitors waiting room.

The monthly Let Our People Go protests were initiated by members of Kehilla Community Synagogue on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 11am, modeled in part on the first Saturday vigils held by our partners at Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. A grassroots effort, Let Our People Go is organized by volunteers from Kehilla’s Immigration Committee. The ongoing participation from Bend the Arc Bay Area Solidarity activists, Congregation Beth El, and other regular attendees is what creates a powerful community circle, a sustained message of resistance to the powers that lets detainees and their loved ones know that estamos en la lucha con ellos. **If your school, network, affinity group or congregation is interested in getting involved, contact us at letourpeoplego@kehillasynagogue.org.**

A one-hour protest, Let Our People Go is a way for our communities—especially those with citizenship privileges—to stand up for our peoples and bring more attention to this immoral site of internment right in our community. We aim to convey a sustained message of resistance to the right wing’s racist, xenophobic, anti-Muslim, ableist, transphobic, homophobic, misogynist ramp up of authoritarian policing, mass incarceration and deportation practices—if not now, when?

Demand DA O’Malley Charge Mateu with Murder of Sahleem Tindle @ Outsidfe the Rene Davidson Courthouse
Apr 11 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am

We’ve all seen the video! How is it that BART police officer Joseph Mateu has not already been charged with the murder of Sahleem Tindle, after he shot the 28 year old in the back three times? Join us to demand that Nancy O’Malley do her job and charge and prosecute Mateu for murder. O’Malley has yet to prosecute a single killer cop. It’s time to break that unjust record!

The family asks that people wear white for this action.

Sahleem Tindle was murdered by BART Police Officer Joseph Mateu on January 3, 2018. He is now back on the job, after only a two week leave. The family demands: fire, arrest, charge and prosecute Joseph Mateu!

Rally at 11:30 AM
March to Oscar Grant Plaza at 12:30 PM
Rally at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater, 14th and Broadway at 1:30 PM
Speakers and program TBD

– End U.S. overt and covert wars, drone wars, sanction/embargo wars, and death squad assassination wars.

— Close all U.S. bases on foreign soil. Dismantle all nuclear weapons.

— Bring all U.S. troops home now. Self-determination not military intervention. U.S. hands off the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America. End U.S. aid to apartheid Israel. Self-determination for Palestine. The U.S. cannot be the cop of the world.

– $Trillions for human needs. For jobs and social services, quality debt-free education and single payer health care. No to anti-union legislation. For $15 and a Union Now.

– Defend the environment against life-threatening fossil fuel-induced global warming. For a rapid transition to a 100 percent clean, sustainable energy system and retraining and jobs at union wages for all displaced energy workers.

— No to white supremacy and racist policies and actions against Muslims, immigrants, people of color, and indigenous peoples. No to police brutality/murder. End racist mass incarceration. Black Lives Matter!

— No human being is illegal. No to deportations. Yes to DACA and TPS (Temporary Protective Status) and a just and early path to citizenship. No ban, no wall!

– No to sexism, sexual violence, and harassment and targeting of LGBTQI communities. Yes to equal work and pay. Support women’s reproductive rights.

The U.S. government and its leading Pentagon generals openly and repeatedly threaten nuclear war or massive military intervention against sovereign nations. Such is the case today with North Korea, Iran and Venezuela. Simultaneously, U.S. military forces are at war in several nations including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia. Haiti and Honduras also face covert and ongoing U.S. intervention.

More than 800 U.S. military bases circle the globe in more than 170 countries at the cost of $trillions, while these same $trillions are subtracted from critical social programs at home. $Trillions in tax cuts and corporate bailouts are granted to the super rich while the war at home takes on virulent racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, Islamophobic and homophobic forms.

WORKSHOP ON AIR POLLUTION IN WEST OAKLAND @ Lincoln Child Center
Apr 22 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

West Oakland residents will get the results of three recent air monitoring studies  and discuss how to use this information and local knowledge to push for a truly comprehensive plan that minimizes air pollution in our neighborhoods.

The three studies were done in connection with a new Truck Management Program for West Oakland. The workshop will cover 100 x 100 air monitoring sensors placed throughout West Oakland; EDF/Google air mapping; and a study analyzing why filters on trucks are not working effectively at the Port of Oakland. The results of these studies will inform attendees of scientific findings about how black carbon — the main component of soot emitted from diesel engines, wood smoke, and other sources — varies throughout West Oakland.

Workshop participants will work together to set priorities and recommend ways that this information and residents’ local knowledge can inform the City and the Port of Oakland to produce a truly comprehensive plan that minimizes air pollution in our neighborhoods.

Shut Down Chase! National and Local Actions @ Oscar Grant Plaza
May 7 @ 8:30 am – 6:00 pm

JP Morgan Chase bank, one of the biggest investors in tar sands, increased its tar sands investments by nearly $6 billion last year — and also increased its investments in coal. Join a local rally as part of a nationwide day of action to #ShutDownChase.

Monday May 7 is the annual shareholder meeting for TransCanada, the company trying to build the KXL pipeline.  Climate defenders are working to stop the KXL pipeline and keep tar sands in the ground with a three-prong strategy:

  1. Mass mobilization with the Promise to Protect: Building and igniting a grassroots movement ready to follow the leadership of Indigenous people along the route if TransCanada moves forward.
  2. Financial targets: Going after banks, like JP Morgan Chase, who are financing Keystone XL and other dirty fossil fuel projects, can cut off the funding necessary to build these dirty projects. Momentum is growing with the international bank HSBC’s commitment to drop nearly all holdings in tar sands, coal, and arctic drilling last week.
  3. Legal action: Fighting TransCanada every step of the way in the courts at the state and federal level.

The national day of action to shut down Chase, hosted by Rainforest Action Network, is part of this strategy.

Righteous Resistance Symposium @ First Congregational Church of Oakland
May 18 @ 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm

We face a current political and social climate that continues to belie black humanity – where, without impunity, a young black man can be followed into his grandmother’s backyard and shot in the back six times out of the 20 shots fired at him.

Will we stand on the sideline or will we join the important struggle that Black Americans & many others daily endure to live free from racism, violence & terror?

We believe we are called to lean into a ministry and theology of resistance, reclaiming the hope and power inherent in our prophetic faiths, giving us courage and healing for the days ahead.

There are many different ways that your congregation and community can enter into solidarity with us.

There will be a time of celebration and fellowship, and training around resisting State Violence, ICE Raids, 2018 Election, Digital Organizing, and the Poor Peoples Campaign Workshops.

We are inviting you to wrestle with the principalities and powers that manifest themselves in racial prejudice, systemic evil and violence, and religious apathy and complicity.

We need you here; it is our duty to firght for freedom!

THE WAR ECONOMY: MILITARISM & THE PROLIFERATION OF GUN VIOLENCE *RSVP http://bit.ly/PPCWeek3*

50 years ago, Dr. MLK Jr. started the Poor People’s Campaign to spark a radical revolution of values across the nation. The campaign was intended to turn his dream, our dream, into a reality. Black, Brown, Yellow, Red, White, folks of every color where invited to band together across differences to build a Beloved Community across the nation. Weeks before the Campaign, King was assassinated. The original movement was unable to come to fruition.

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is picking up where the movement stopped in 1968. Join us for our third week in a SEASON OF NONVIOLENT MORAL DIRECT ACTION. America is in a crisis of values. We must take nonviolent radical action to stand for the dignity of all people in our nation and around the world.

In the third week, we are focusing on the deep violence of The War Economy, American Militarism, the Mistreatment of Veterans, and the Proliferation of Gun Violence. With 140 million American living in poverty, how can we justify spending 57 cents out of every dollar, of our discretionary budget, on the military? How can we remain silent as our veterans go homeless and American-made bombs keep dropping all over the world?

Join us in Moral Resistance as we change our national narrative with over 30 other states in coordinated nonviolent moral fusion civil disobedience.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RISK ARREST TO JOIN THIS ACTION. We need all hands on deck!
