The USF Center for Applied Data Ethics will be hosting a Tech Policy Workshop the weekend of Nov 16 to 17. Systemic problems, such as increasing surveillance, spread of disinformation, concerning uses of predictive policing, and the magnification of unjust bias, all require systemic solutions.

We invite anyone working in the tech industry or in public policy, and to community members concerned about the impact of misuses of tech on society to attend. By hosting a Tech Policy Workshop, we hope to facilitate collaborations between those in tech and in policy, as well as highlight the need for policy interventions in addressing ethical issues to those working in tech. The workshop will include a mix of talks, workshops and breakout sessions.

They are aiming to hold a lease sale as early as this December.

Chevron has emerged as a top contender and potential bidder. So let’s take the fight to them and send a resounding message that Arctic drilling is bad business. Join us at the Chevron Richmond Refinery on November 22nd from 10:00 am – 11:30.

The Gwich’in Nation of Alaska and Canada have been leading the fight to protect the Refuge, and they’re asking for widespread support from people in the Lower 48 this fall. We are honored to have four representatives from the Gwich’in Steering Committee leading this action in Richmond. Presentations and panels on Nov. 26 cover topics including International Indigenous Movements in the Global South, the BDS Movement and Palestine, UN initiatives including those on sustainable development and a study on sterilization of Indigenous women, LGBTQ and Two Spirit groups and issues, Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Youth Incarceration, Political Prisoners including Red Fawn Fallis and Leonard Peltier, the US-Mexico border and militarization, and more.

Tuesday’s keynote will be Madonna Thunder Hawk, co-founder of Women of All Red Nations, on “There is No Light at the End of the Tunnel.

We’ll sit-in outside the mall before slowly processing inside to hold a die-in.

Bay Area Women in Black March and Vigil @ Powell St. BART

Bay Area Women in Black’s annual Black Friday March and Vigil calls for a boycott of products whose sale supports the cruel and illegal occupation of Palestine. Fliers and signs offer the rationale for the boycott and urge the end of U.S. military aid to the State of Israel. This is a non-violent event.

On the biggest shopping day of the year in the U.S., Bay Area Women in Black will once again show how profits from the sale of certain items and participation by businesses and cultural groups in events sponsored by the State of Israel are used to impose illegal and cruel occupation and colonialism on the people of Palestine.

Please join our non-violent march and vigil from the Powell Street BART Station to Union Square. Fliers and signs will show how specific businesses promote illegal occupation and daily living conditions called “worse than apartheid” by Bishop Desmond Tutu, conditions supported by U.S. tax dollars. Prepare to participate in the singing of BDS-themed “anti-carols”. Drums and banners welcome.

Please dress in black and gather on Friday, Nov. 29, at the Powell Street BART station at 11:45 for a 12:00 PM march to Union Square, returning to BART by 1 PM. The San Francisco Police Department will escort us.

National Climate Strike in Oakland @ Oscar Grant Plaza

Join Oakland youth for a community Resilient Village to raise awareness on climate resilience and our upcoming climate chaos with hands-on workshops on herbal making, civic engagement, art, water catchment, and more. We will also provide tools for youth and allies to learn about divestment from fossil fuels and investment in the Green New Deal and provide ways to get involved.

This action is youth led and co-hosted by YVA, Mycelium Youth Network, Planting Justice and others.

We hope this will lead into a city wide disaster resilience planning meeting with city officials on Saturday 12/7.

The September 20th Climate Strike was the largest day of action for climate justice ever. On December 6th, as world leaders gather at the UN’s annual climate conference, young people across America will join a national #ClimateStrike to take the momentum from September to our elected officials’ doorsteps.

In September, many politicians shared nice words of encouragement. But, we didn’t walk out of school and work to earn their praise. We joined the #ClimateStrike because our lives depend on elected leaders treating this crisis like the emergency it is.

On December 6th, we’ll show up at the offices of our political leaders and ask them, are you ready to stand with our generation and fight for a Green New Deal?

PG&E: We Need Power to Live! @ PG&E HQ

Join Diablo Rising Tide and many allies at PG&E corporate headquarters to #ReclaimOurPower and start a wave of action that continues through the winter. There will be speakers, programming, and more! Accessible and kid-friendly.

The action will demand that PG&E:

1. GIVE BACK ALL SHAREHOLDER PROFITS UNTIL PG&E CAN SAFELY PROVIDE POWER. STOP PROFITING OFF PEOPLE’S LIVES.

PG&E has paid out billions in shareholder dividends to predatory investors, while people are dying due to PG&E’s negligence. PG&E has failed to upgrade infrastructure for the stresses we face amidst climate change. Their equipment failures start fires that burn down cities, displace whole communities, and poison the air we breathe across entire regions. PG&E dodges accountability by continuing to seek executive bonuses amidst bankruptcy, shutting down power instead of repairing their equipment, and spending thousands on an exclusive retreat the day before the largest shutoffs.

2. INVEST IN VULNERABLE PEOPLE’S BASIC POWER NEEDS. STOP PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK.

Disabled people have died in the shut offs — even one loss is too many. Ten more years of blackouts are unacceptable because blackouts kill disabled people and harm Black and Brown, working class and poor communities. #NoBodyIsDisposable! PG&E must invest in: solar-powered batteries to power the equipment of every medical baseline customer during power outages; HEPA air filters for chronically ill people, elders, and children in areas impacted by fire smoke; groceries for people who live paycheck to paycheck; alternative lodging for people whose homes depend on power to survive; compensation for small businesses who experienced losses during the shutoffs; and payouts to victims of PG&E-caused fires.

3. TURN PG&E OVER TO THE PEOPLE.

PG&E has a well documented history of criminal negligence of its infrastructure, which has caused fires, death, and destruction. Now, PG&E has claimed that it will take ten years to fix California’s grid — that means 10 more years of rolling black outs with the public footing the bill. This is unacceptable and will consistently put so many lives at risk. We won’t let PG&E continue with their negligence. A public takeover of the grid will allow for the needs of the public, rather than shareholders, to be the priority. By switching to a publicly owned grid, California can create a more democratized, decentralized, and sustainable power grid for all. #CleanPowerToThePeople

On Saturday, January 4 the ANSWER Coalition, CODEPINK and others are calling on people from around the United States to organize local demonstrations to demand: NO MORE U.S. TROOPS TO IRAQ OR THE MIDDLE EAST! U.S. OUT OF IRAQ NOW! and NO WAR/NO SANCTIONS ON IRAN!

In response to the massive protests in Iraq following the latest U.S. aerial assault that killed scores of Iraqis, Donald Trump has ordered 750 more U.S. troops to the Middle East and potentially 3,000 more. This is in addition to the 5,200 U.S. troops already stationed in Iraq. Every U.S. president over the last 28 years has ordered the bombing of Iraq. The decision by Donald Trump and the Pentagon to launch new air assaults against Iraqis in the past week ignited nationwide resistance by Iraqis who want to reclaim their full sovereignty and do not want Iraq to be used in a U.S. war on Iran.

More than a million Iraqis have died during the past 28 years as a consequence of U.S. occupation, bombings and sanctions. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops have either been killed or suffered life-changing wounds. The U.S. government has spent more than $3 trillion in the ongoing occupation and bombing of this oil rich country. Instead of taking the United States out of this endless war, Trump is building up U.S. forces in the region and threatening a war with Iran.

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.
