Meeting to set the agenda for Sunday’s General Assembly
“At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha, a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt the Cause.
I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business. I was tired of having the Cause constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from convention and prejudice, should demand the denial of life and joy. I insisted that our Cause could not expect me to become a nun and that the movement would not be turned into a cloister. If it meant that, I did not want it. “I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody’s right to beautiful, radiant things.” Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world — prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own closest comrades I would live my beautiful ideal.”
-Emma Goldman

Occupy Oakland is a resurrection movement, and it has once again risen from the dead after the police raid early Monday morning! Join us Wednesday for our weekly “Liberation Bible Study” at Oscar Grant/Frank Ogawa Plaza. just prior to General Assembly, which begins at 6.
We are excited to announce that this week, the Bible study will be led by Gerald O. West, a visiting South African liberation worker and Bible scholar who was active as a white man in the anti-Apartheid movement and now teaches at the Ujaama Center.
In these Bible studies, we read scripture together for guidance in how to decolonize our minds and spirits in the context of the Occupy (to Decolonize) Oakland movement. Join us every Wednesday or whenever you can.
We will meet at the entrance to the plaza just north of Tully’s at 14th and Broadway. Look for the circle of people with a stack of Bibles in the middle.

Thursday morning, as an act of unity with the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz Island, Occupy Oakland will be broadcasting the Sunrise Ceremony at Oscar Grant Plaza.
We will be assembling a community altar space beginning in the early morning and continuing throughout the day. All are invited to bring sacred objects to share. In particular, we’re requesting sage, copal, objects symbolizing the 4 directions, images of indigenous resistance, and images of indigenous life before conquest.
The community is also invited to bring breakfast and warm drinks to share with one another after the Sunrise Ceremony is broadcast.
From noon until 5, Terrance Nelson, Clyde Bellecourt, Oglala Vice President Tom Poor Bear and many other will be joining us for a series of speeches, performances and a mid-day feast.
Immediately following, the community will gather for Grateful Mic: Music and Words of Gratitude and Solidarity from the Oakland Community.
Come out to Oscar Grant plaza to help us prepare a feast for the Occupy Oakland community. Food donations welcome and much appreciated.
