City of Oakland says not so fast to sale of half the Coliseum site to the A’s

Phil Matier Aug. 4, 2019 Updated: Aug. 4, 2019 6:43 a.m.
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/philmatier/article/City-of-Oakland-says-not-so-fast-to-sale-of-half-14277040.php

The phone lines are burning up in the East Bay over a move by the Oakland City Council that could throw a wrench into the deal for the Oakland A’s new waterfront ballpark.

At issue is Alameda County’s half share of the 155 acre Oakland-Alameda Coliseum site, which it plans to sell to the A’s for $85 million.

The city of Oakland owns the other half and would retain its share in the site. But some City Council members say the county should sell its share to the city, even though it’s unclear if the city has the money to buy out the county.

The A’s have said that the revenues earned from developing the Coliseum site, where the team now plays, is a key component to financing the ballpark at the Port of Oakland’s Howard Terminal.

Nonetheless, sources said the Oakland City Council instructed the city attorney in a closed meeting before going on summer break to draft a letter to the county opposing the sale and raising the possibility of a legal challenge if the deal goes through.

To date however, no letter has been sent.

“I think they are rattling their sabers,” said Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty.

Oakland council members we spoke with confirmed having voted to send the letter, but declined to comment publicly because the matter is still under discussion.

Oakland Port Privatization Scam By Billionaire John Fisher, Demos & Union Bureaucrats
https://youtu.be/1hu_s7A4Yc8

Bay Area ILWU Local 10 and Local 34 longshore workers held a press conference on June 13, 2019 to protest the privatization of the Port Of Oakland Howard Terminal for billionaire A’s owner John Fisher’s new stadium.

ILWU 10 former Secretary Treasurer Clarence Thomas and ILWU Local 34 president Keith Shanklin talked about the threat to not only union maritime jobs but the gentrification of West Oakland by the planned 4,000 condos for more than $1 million each.
They also attacked East Bay Democrats Rob Bonta and CA Senator Nancy Skinner for their “fast track” bills that would override zoning and health and safety protections for the A’s owner John Fisher. Fisher and his family including Doris Fisher also run the union busting charter chains Rocketship and KIPP which are siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars from public schools in Oakland and througout the state and country.

ILWU also challenged the role of the Alameda Labor Council leadership and that union bureaucrats who are pushing the stadium regardless of the fact that it would destroy the unionized jobs in the port of Oakland of all maritime workers who work at the port.

The Port of Oakland is the 3rd largest port on the West Coast and shippers would be driven out of the Port if this gentrifcation and stadium in built on the bay port property of Howard Terminal. The terminal is used by truckers and also to train longshore workers in the port.

The Oakland City council voted unanimously to support Bonta and Skinner’s bills to “fast track” the privatization of the port and the building of Fisher’s stadium and 4,000 $1 million dollar condos.

Labor Day Rally for Healthcare Justice at Kaiser
Sep 2 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

Thousands of SEIU-UHW members across the state are publicly rejecting Kaiser’s greed and hypocrisy this Labor Day — protesting against Kaiser’s unfair labor practices and demanding a new contract that protects our futures, families, and patients.

Kaiser is making record profits and gave the CEO a 60% raise to $16 million a year. But when it comes to us, the healthcare workers who help patients thrive, Kaiser is bargaining in bad faith and demanding unprecedented cuts in our next contract.

RSVP to commit to rallying with SEIU-UHW members statewide to win a contract that protects our jobs, wages, and benefits from Kaiser’s corporate greed.

Global Day of Action for the Amazon @ Brazilian Consulate
Sep 5 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Join Amazon Watch and Extinction Rebellion to answer the call from the National Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) for global pressure to  force Brazil to address the urgent need to suppress the fires, protect the Amazon and respect the rights of indigenous peoples and their territory.

Unprecedented fires are ravaging the Amazon – more than 74,000 fires this year is an 84% increase over last year’s count. This is an international tragedy and a dangerous contribution to climate chaos.

This devastation is directly related to President Bolsonaro’s anti-environmental rhetoric, which erroneously frames forest protections and human rights as impediments to Brazil’s economic growth. Farmers and ranchers understand the president’s message as a license to commit arson to expand their operations into the rainforest.

Amazon destruction is not new, however. Indigenous people of the Amazon have been sounding the alarm about risks to the rainforest for years and resisting the destruction – sometimes at the cost of their own lives

Governments and companies around the world are emboldening Bolsonaro’s toxic policies when they enter trade agreements with his government or invest in agribusiness companies operating in the Amazon.

Amazon Watch and APIB conducted an investigation this year that showed how many US and European companies – like Cargill and ADM – and financiers – like BlackRock, JP Morgan Chase and Santander – are complicit in Amazon deforestation.

Bay Area Nurses to Protest Deportation of Their Severely Ill Patient @ UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital
Sep 6 @ 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm

Sending Maria Isabel Bueso to Guatemala amounts to a death sentence

Registered nurses from California Nurses Association (CNA) and other health care workers will protest the impending deportation of one of their severely ill patients on Friday, Sept. 6, announced CNA.

Maria Isabel Bueso, 24, has been treated since she was a young child at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland for a rare genetic disease. In August, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sent a letter informing Bueso that she and her family must leave the United States or be deported at the end of September.

“As caregivers and human beings, we can’t sit on the sidelines while the Trump administration puts the lives of our patients at risk,” said Aina Gagui, an RN at Children’s Hospital. “Immigrants are human beings whose lives are not to be thrown away at the whim of the most callous federal government we’ve ever seen.”

When Bueso was a child, she emigrated with her family from Guatemala to the United States under medical deferred action at the invitation of doctors who wanted her to participate in clinical drug trials. She receives lifesaving weekly medical treatments at Children’s Hospital for mucopolysaccharidosis type VI, a disease that causes short stature and other physical deformities.

“You’re really handing her a death sentence,” said Dr. Paul Harmatz, Bueso’s physician, on MSNBC. “It’s as if we’re pulling the plug on a respirator or stopping feedings for a patient that needs that type of support.”

Bueso, along with other extremely ill patients, had previously been given permission to stay in the United States to receive lifesaving medical treatment that is unavailable in their home countries. Deportation will put her life and other patients’ lives at risk.

BERKELEY HOMELESS ASK: “WHERE DO WE GO?” @ Berkeley City Council Chambers, School District Board Room
Sep 10 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

A community of approximately 40 to 50 unhoused Berkeley residents, who have been living for months in encampments on the verge of the I- 80 interchange at University Avenue, learned last week that they are about to be evicted in a coordinated enforcement action planned by the City of Berkeley, California Highway Patrol (CHP), Berkeley Police Department (BPD), and Caltrans.

The plan is that beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 11, Caltrans, with the assistance of the CHP, will evict people and their belongings from their state properties. Immediately following, when these same unhoused individuals move on to City of Berkeley adjacent alleys and sidewalks, BPD will evict them again with threats of arrest and property confiscation. Many of them, who are now sheltering between the on ramps and off ramps of the freeway, were driven out of Berkeley when police began enforcing the new sidewalk ordinance that prohibits people from having a shelter and belongings that take up more than 3 square feet.

The question they keep asking is: If you don’t want us here and we can’t go any further west without landing in the water, “Where do we go?” In an attempt to get an answer to that question, a coalition of Berkeley advocates, activists, and unhoused residents plan to converge on the City Council and pose that question directly to our elected officials and city  administrators.

Palantir: Never Again Is Now! #NoTechForICE @ Palantir HQ
Sep 13 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

PALANTIR, NEVER AGAIN IS NOW!

#JewsAgainstICE and allies know our history. IBM sold tech to Nazis. Palantir sells tech to ICE. This state sponsored terror must end NOW. Join us in actions to shut down Palantir from coast to coast on 9/13 to demand they #DropICEContracts.

Because #NeverAgainisNOW!
—————————————————————

We are calling on all those who denounce ICE’s reign of terror to join in action outside the Palo Alto headquarters of Palantir, a tech company that provides tools for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Last month, Palantir renewed its contract with ICE, providing a tool that has been used by ICE agents in investigations of children who crossed the border alone and their families. This tool, called Investigative Case Management, was used by ICE agents in an operation that specifically targeted the families and sponsors of unaccompanied children, comparing them to “smugglers” and investigating them for arrest and deportation.

Palantir has another tool that was used by agents leading workplace raids, which spiked 650% in President Trump’s first year in office, and we have seen ICE agents tackling people to the floor, handcuffing them, and loading them onto buses in front of their friends and family.

PALANTIR MUST DROP THESE CONTRACTS

The signing date for Palantir’s ICM contract is September 20. It’s not too late for Palantir to pledge it will not work for ICE’s deportation machine. It’s not too late for Palantir workers to join hundreds of other tech workers saying #TechWontBuildIt and pledge that they will not use their skill to build tools for immigration enforcement.

Palantir is complicit. As IBM made punch cards for Nazi Germany or as Hugo Boss designed uniforms for the Nazi SS, so is Palantir hitching its legacy to a machine of human rights atrocities that will live in infamy. History teaches all of us that we must not repeat the mistakes of previous generations, mistakes that lead to grave amounts of human suffering.

We are seeing this suffering today — in concentration camps detaining thousands and thousands throughout the country, at our border where people are arbitrarily prevented from entering, and in workplaces, schools, and homes nationwide subject to cruel deportation raids. We refuse to stand by and see what new terror the administration will roll out with its corporate partners.

THE TIME TO STAND UP TO PALANTIR IS NOW

We know that the pressure of the people is working and that our protesting is getting to Palantir’s decision makers. Tech conferences, not wanting to be associated with human rights atrocities, have been dropping Palantir as their sponsors. Palantir co-founder Joe Londsdale felt the need to write an op-ed defending his former company. And CEO Alex Karp was motivated to publish an op-ed in the Washington Post in a vain attempt to absolve Palantir of its role in ICE’s terrorism.

Until Palantir cuts its ties with ICE, we will make it impossible for them to do business as usual. We have learned a simple lesson from past human rights violations: It is only by sitting by and doing nothing that we allow suffering on our watch. Collaborators are complicit. We have a duty to oppose them.
Palantir must be held accountable. It’s time for tech workers throughout Silicon Valley to choose a side. Join us and demand that they do. #NoTechforICE

Close The Camps – Free Our Children. Day of Action. @ Various locations as the day goes on. Beginning at:

Close the Camps – Free Our Children

Schedule of Actions

11:00 AM RALLY at 24th & Mission Street
12:00 Noon MARCH to City Hall
1:00 PM RALLY at City Hall
3:00 PM Protest at ICE
3:00 PM Delegation to present DEMANDS to Congresswoman Pelosi
3:00 PM Delegation to present DEMANDS to Senator Feinstein
6:00 PM Mexican Independence Day Celebration & Rally at 24th & Mission Street

WHO ARE WE? – Close the Camps – Free Our Children is a Bay Area grassroots coalition drawn together
by outrage at the horrific mistreatment of immigrants at our borders, particularly children. We are
people of color, faith-based groups, community members, artists, citizens and non-citizens, attorneys,
labor, activist, students, parents, allied organizations and concerned community members that are
committed to closing the camps and freeing innocent children.

WHY ARE WE PROTESTING? – We are outraged at the inhumane conditions that exist at the detention
centers. We are here to connect with those who share our outrage and to create the platform needed to
enact change! We condemn the criminalization of migrants and refugees who are seeking a better life
and we are taking action to bring about real immigration reform.

The recent killing of 22 people in El Paso, Texas, the majority of Mexican descent, also points to the
direct connection between anti-immigrant sentiments and white-supremacist domestic terrorism. It is
deplorable that the President of the United States continues to use inflammatory rhetoric to incite
domestic terrorism against what he calls the “invasion” of immigrants. We stand in direct opposition to
this divisive hate speech which is responsible for the killing of innocent U.S. citizens and Mexican
nationals.

WHAT IS TO BE DONE? – On Sept 16, 2019 – Mexican Independence Day – we will protest and rally
against the inhumane conditions and immoral policies that harm individuals, target immigrants and
damage the fabric of our democracy. We will take direct action to bring attention and awareness to
these issues, and demand action from our elected officials. We will present these demands to elected
officials responsible for oversight and we will monitor the implementation in the months to come. Our
policy demands include:

1. Close the camps NOW! – Eliminate all contracts with private prison operators. Groups such as
CoreCivic and Geo Group receive millions of dollars in contracts, and make huge profits for
detaining immigrants and their children who are seeking asylum.
2. Free Our Children NOW! – We demand the immediate release of our innocent children from
cages that house them, and immediate reunification with their parents or relatives while
awaiting asylum as per the nation’s existing laws.
3. Immediately eliminate section 1325 from the U.S Code – Section 1325 from the U.S Code makes
it a criminal violation to enter the United States without inspection, and is the legal basis for
separating children.
4. Full Amnesty NOW! – Develop an immediate pathway for full citizenship for the millions of
individuals living and contributing to this country. End the 3, 5, and 10 year ban that require the
undocumented who might qualify for legal status to leave the country in order to fulfill
becoming a citizen.
5. Defend and expand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary protected
Status (TPS), and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) – We support asylum for all political
refugees and we oppose the current Muslim Ban.
6. Boycott companies providing services to Custom Border Patrol (CBP) – More than 1,123
vendors collect over $6.4 billion provide an array of goods and services including vehicles, food,
furniture, and housekeeping, computers, and data collection software to CBP. A company such
as Palantir took over $41 million dollar in contracts to provide surveillance and is complicit in
raids conducted by ICE.
7. Make Domestic Terrorism a Federal Crime – It is time for Congress to enact a federal offense of
domestic terrorism, and include white-nationalist supremacists on the domestic terrorist list.
Immigrants must not be the fodder for racist, domestic terrorism!
We support and will coalesce with allied groups who continue to stand in opposition to the current
administration’s immigration policies. We support all actions to close ICE offices across the country,
permanently!

Climate Strike – San Francisco @ San Francisco Federal Bldg
Sep 20 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

We call for a youth-led climate strike march, going to different targets that are contributing to climate breakdown, leaving our mark to let these places know what we are fighting for. We will again start at the office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and will connect targets in government, finance, and energy. For those that can’t join in person, we will be asking people to post on social media and tag our targets.

Demands:

1.WE DEMAND A SAFE, HEALTHY AND JUST PLANET.
This climate crisis threatens our ability to live. If climate change continues on this course, we won’t be able to eat, breathe, or have safe shelter. In order to successfully fight the climate crisis we are facing, we must also fight the systems of white supremacy, racism, greed, and exploitation that have led us to it. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for a world that is safe, healthy, and just for all of its inhabitants. We must enact climate emergency plans at the local, national, and international level.

2. WE DEMAND JUSTICE AND ASYLUM FOR PEOPLE DIAPLACED BY CLIMATE CHANGE.
Individuals and families displaced by climate change seek asylum in a safe place because they have nowhere else to go. Climate justice means abolishing ICE, closing concentration camps at the border, ending family separation, and creating inclusive new laws and regulations that treat everyone as human.

3. WE DEMAND POLICY BASED ON SCIENCE.
We have eleven years before the effects of the climate emergency are irreversible. We can’t afford to compromise with climate change deniers. We must enact immediate legislation based on scientific analysis of carbon emissions and the ways that climate disasters impact certain communities. Science clearly shows that global temperatures are rising dangerously, and that we are on track to face unprecedented climate disasters. We demand a Green New Deal, a resolution that lays out a science-based plan to reach negative carbon emissions by 2030.

4. WE DEMAND THAT PEOPLE, NOT CORPORATIONS, INFLUENCE POLICY.
Representation and transparency are vital for successful democracies; corporate money must be taken out of politics. We demand all politicians sign the “No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge.” We demand Citizens United must be overturned and super PAC’s be abolished. Corporate funding and donations from millionaires and billionaires must be replaced with public funding of elections in addition to small-dollar donations. To ensure that every vote counts, we must restore the Voting Rights Act, secure automatic registration for every citizen above 18, and re-enfranchise those convicted of felonies.

5. WE DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL.
The government must be for the people, by the people; all policies and decisions made must be for the benefit of all. Black and trans lives matter; the Equality Act must be passed. The rights of Brown, Black, and Middle Eastern migrants must be respected. Women deserve full reproductive justice, and equity in the workplace. We demand universal background checks and Medicare for All in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. We demand diversity and representation, and intersectionality must fuel the climate justice movement. Frontline communities must have a voice and leadership role, and we look to indigenous communities to lead the transition to a just and sustainable world.

6. WE DEMAND THAT HUMANS PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF NATURE.
Just as humans have rights, nature has rights. Humans have a moral obligation to respect and protect plants, animals, and ecosystems. We demand that the rights of nature be legally represented. This includes legislation to provide sanctuary for endangered species, regulate hunting, and end deforestation, pollution, destructive fuel extraction, fracking, factory farming, and unsustainable agriculture. All life is interconnected, and we must live in harmony with the Earth.

7. WE DEMAND A JUST TRANSITION
Countries and individuals that have contributed the most to climate change must be held accountable. We demand urgent climate action, including the GND, that protects vulnerable communities and create economic justice. Policies must respect workers’ rights ’to living wages and health care, young people’s rights to free, relevant education, and everyone’s right to affordable housing. To quote Movement Generation:

Transition is inevitable. Justice is not. A just transition is the process of getting from where we are to where we need to be by transforming the systems of economy and governance.

A just transition requires moving from a globalized capitalist industrial economy to linked local living participatory economies that provide well-being for all.

The Main Stream Media (MSM) is so full of lies, it’s got the masses confused!!
There are only a few places we can get the truth.Chelsea and Julian were two of
the most important WHISTLE BLOWERS to tell the truth about USA’s illegal,
immoral WARS. USA is one of the largest TERRORIST countries in history,
killing, wounding, and forcing emigration on millions of folks (did you know there
are 65 million migrants?) all over the world!!

Saving Chelsea and Julian is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! To the Working
class and it’s Allies. They told us the truth about the wars! And all the NEW
McArthyism (phony Russia Gate conspiracy led by the New York Times) is
blaming Julian for being a puppet of Russia. So much of all our issues stem from
the honesty of Chelsea and Julian!! That’s why the RULING CLASS imprisoned
them and want’s them DEAD.

Please write letters to Chelsea (only hand written and no post cards or
pictures, or anything written on the outside of the letter) Write to: Chelsea

Emergency Mobilization: UC Berkeley Drop Palantir! #NoTechForICE @ 430 Soda Hall, Wozniak Hall
Sep 24 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

UC BERKELEY: SHOW PALANTIR THEY’RE NOT WELCOME HERE!

On September 24, the tech giant that powers ICE, Palantir Technologies, plans to visit UC Berkeley for a so-called “Ethics & Tech Panel” to recruit Berkeley tech students. Palantir is working hand-in-hand with ICE to build tools to surveil, detain, and deport migrants and keep kids locked in cages — and UC Berkeley’s EECS department has a $20,000 a year contract with the corporation, meaning this institution is directly complicit in ICE terror.

THE TIME TO STAND UP TO PALANTIR AND ICE IS NOW. Our tuition fuels deportations.

We’re demanding Berkeley cancel the info session:
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/bears-against-ice-tell-eecs-to-cancel-info-session-with-palantir-the-tech-giant-behind-ices-deportation-machine

If they don’t, be ready to join us in protest outside the event on campus — MEETING TIME TO BE ANNOUNCED.

Palantir’s surveillance technology is “mission critical” to ICE’s operations, according to the agency itself, and the company relies on the labor of EECS, CS, and Data Science graduates to develop it. These tools explicitly enable ICE to detain and deport immigrants with ruthless efficiency.

This year, Palantir technology was used to arrest at least 443 mothers, fathers, and other family members and sponsors when ICE investigated children who crossed the border alone. Palantir was shown to be intimately involved in the workplace raid this month that arrested almost 700 people in Mississippi, the largest such raid in a decade. These raids have increased by 650% under President Trump, targeting thousands annually for arrest and deportation. Without the Palantir technology that enables ICE to live track families, these numbers would be far lower. The company has faced outcry this year, calling for it to stop facilitating the ICE deportation machine.

Cal’s engineering and data science curricula parade “ethics” as a required component of our education. Collaborating with Palantir not only abandons our university’s commitment as a so-called sanctuary campus to protect our undocumented students, but directly contradicts its own curriculum. Members of our community study long and hard with the eventual goal of using these skills to improve society through technology’s potential. Palantir is attempting to recruit us to do the opposite.

Fellow students: don’t be complicit! REFUSE to work with Palantir or attend the info session. Join hundreds of tech workers saying #TechWontBuildIt, pledging they will not build tools for immigration enforcement:
https://action.mijente.net/petitions/tell-palantir-to-drop-its-contracts-with-ice-uc-berkeley-students

DEMAND the event is cancelled:
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/bears-against-ice-tell-eecs-to-cancel-info-session-with-palantir-the-tech-giant-behind-ices-deportation-machine

If it isn’t, STAND WITH US on the 24th! We are calling on all those who denounce ICE’s reign of terror to join in action. More details to come!
