We held our second Debtor’s Assembly (watch a video from our first one in February), May 18th in San Francisco.
We are planning our next general get-together wherein our five current subgroups: Direct Action, Debtor’s Union, Outreach and Education, Alternative Institutions, and Research, will meet, organize, plan and report back. It will be held on June 29, at 900 Alice St, Oakland 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
We will be talking about our coalition organizing with Save the Berkeley Post Office, and have a report back from our Debtors’ Union subcommittee.
We will be discussing our next major actions.

Strike Debt Bay Area, loosely affiliated with Strike Debt (check out their latest video) and Occupy, is dedicated to educating people about and organizing resistance to debt, and finding alternatives to our current system of debt slavery.

We are figuring out how to get Miguel Masso, the officer who killed Alan Blueford, fired and prosecuted. In light of the recent upheavals in the Oakland Police Department, we are renewing our calls for the firing of Masso and justice for Alan. We held a press conference to this effect on Thursday, May 16th.
We are formulating how we should interact with Judge Thelton Henderson’s newly appointed Compliance Director for the Oakland police, Thomas Frazier.
We are discussing how we can aide other families who are victims of police violence.
We are making a difference! We can use all the help we can get! Come join us!

We are beginning a FACTS and LIES campaign to educate Oakland about the truth of what happened to Alan Blueford and the lies OPD and the DA promulgated and continue to promulgate.

The press has been overflowing with reports on exploding student debt, and the payday lending industry is under increasing public scrutiny. Let’s take this momentum and radicalize it!
Join Strike Debt Bay Area on Saturday June 29th for our next Ideas Into Action meeting.
Bring your ideas and/or plug into ongoing projects:
– reading groups on debt & capitalism
– the seeds of some exciting debtors union tactics, both locally and nationally
– a series of solidarity actions with the US Postal Service and Save the Berkeley Post Office Coalition. (See more info here). Hopefully to eventuate in public/postal banking!!!!
– beginning to think about campus organizing for the fall (UC Berkeley, Laney, CCSF, SF State, CCA, etc)

Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally and has equal decision-making power. Occupy Oakland’s General Assembly uses a participatory decision-making process appropriately called, “Occupy Oakland’s Collective Decision-Making Process.” Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.
Decision Making
Proposals are brought to the Facilitation Committee, either in person at their regular meetings (19th and Telegraph on Wednesdays at 12:00 PM and Saturdays at 4:00 PM) or through an email to: facilitation@occupyoakland.org, and then are brought to Occupy Oakland’s General Assembly. A proposal becomes a resolution only when it is approved through the mechanics of Occupy Oakland’s collective decision-making process. If the community passes a proposal, then it becomes an official Occupy Oakland resolution.
Autonomous Action & the General Assembly
The bulk of the work of Occupy Oakland does NOT happen in the General Assembly. It happens in various committees, caucuses, and associated groups that report back to the general assembly. Everyone participating in Occupy Oakland should be part of at least one associated group. Occupy Oakland encourages autonomous actions that do not require consensus from the General Assembly. This encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Facilitation Committee
Helps facilitate the operation of the General Assembly. The Facilitation Committee meets at 19th and Telegraph on Wednesdays at 12:00 PM and Saturdays at 4:00 PM. How to Make a Proposal
- Create a group of at least three people that have attended at least one Occupy Oakland General Assembly prior to drafting the proposal.
- Submit your proposal in writing to: facilitation@occupyoakland.org or during a Facilitation Committee meeting.
- Please include contact information for at least three members of your group.
