EMERGENCY ACTION AND MEETING TO DEFEND HUCHIUN – KNOWLAND PARK!

PLEASE SHARE AND INVITE!

http://www.facebook.com/events/1621914134725011/

12:00 PM – Thursday August 6th – The Knowland Park entrance by the intersection of Malcolm and Snowdown Ave.

6:00 PM – Planning Meeting – The Knowland Park entrance by the intersection of Malcolm an Snowdown Ave.

Please join us this Thursday to stop the construction and plan a long term resistance to defend the park and neighborhood from the Zoo!

Over the weekend the Oakland Zoo began constructing a fence around the proposed development site for the Zoo expansion despite public outcry against its negative impacts on the rare habitat and working class neighborhood. The Oakland Zoo plans to cut down 50+ trees including 2 old growth Oak trees destroying the home of the threatened Alameda Whipsnake, the rare Maritime Chaparral plant community and the Mountain Lion. We see this expansion as neo-colonial, gentrifying, and devastating to this rare and beautiful land. Now that the Zoo and City of Oakland are refusing to hear the concerns of a massive community coalition the we are being forced to take direct action to protect the land.

#DayofRage @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Aug 8 @ 4:00 pm – 11:45 pm

#DayofRage is in honor of Sandra Bland. We, the people of the Bay Area, and the United State of Amerika need to stand up and fight the racist, and militant police force that controls us. Its time for us to stand up for our rights and make our voices heard.

We do not want to cause any more violence than we are already accustomed to, but we do need to raise hell. We need to stick up for our brothers and sisters nation wide. We need full police reform. We need your help. Please find time in your busy lives to make a difference. We need voices and bodies from all walks of life, after all, we are in this together. Please spread the word, and invite friends, family, coworkers, etc. We need this senseless violence to stop. Bring noise makers, loud speakers, anything to catch the attention of the masses. How many more deaths will it take for change to happen? Why wait, lets make it happen now.

Remember, if you are reading this, then you ARE the RESISTANCE.

RIP Sandra Bland. Another senseless murder for the fail to use a turning signal.

City Approves Zoo Permit to Destroy Oaks

Red-Xed-TreeDespite our letter of objections that we submitted 6-23-2015 during public comment period, plus over 600 emails from the community asking for permit denial, the Oakland Tree Services division has approved the Zoo’s application to cut down 55 protected Coast live oaks and risk damage to an additional 424 protected trees “within 10 feet of construction” to make way for its planned “California Trail” exhibit in the upper highlands of western Knowland Park.

Environmental organizations and concerned individuals across Oakland and the East Bay have long objected to the Zoo’s choice to locate the exhibit in the heart of this biodiverse gem of public park wildland (the largest remaining public open space in Oakland). We have continually pressed Zoo execs to relocate the exhibit closer to the existing Zoo on already-disturbed available Zoo property. Zoo management has refused in a tragic irony whereby an amazing example of authentic California will be bulldozed and developed to build a Zoo exhibit to honor authentic California. Free public access will be closed off with 8-foot-high chain-link fencing, and sweeping views of the Bay Area would require Zoo admission. This construction will irreversibly damage recognized rare California plant species, and permanently eliminate or disrupt thriving habitat for a range of resident wildlife, including threatened species.

The Zoo’s “tree removal” application itself contains enough errors and inconsistencies to warrant its denial. Therefore, on 7-28-2015, we filed an appeal of the Tree Services division approval.

We just received notice of appeal date on Tuesday, August 18 at 6:00 pm at Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room #1, when we will present our case that the permit should be denied. Please plan to join us for moral support if you can.

Thanks for your ongoing support!

Defend Knowland Park! Direct Action and Call-in against Chain Link Fence and Supply Inc.

http://www.facebook.com/events/953130058065883/

Chain Link Fencing and Supply Inc. (a non-union company) has started to construct a mile-long perimeter fence around the proposed development. We can find no approved building permit for this construction so this fence may be “illegal”. No permit is posted on-site and there has been no response about the fencing from the City building permit staff. Therefore, it is within our “legal” right to take direct action and stop fencing from going up .

Please Join us, Monday – August 17th at Knowland Park to demand their permit to work or if you cannot make it call and email their office repeatedly to jam their lines and respectfully demand information regarding their Work Permit for fencing construction at Knowland Park.

The park was deeded to be protected forever for privatization and not it’s our duty to uphold that deed and Defend Knowland Park

PROTEST FOR ENVIRONMENTAL & CLIMATE JUSTICE! @ SF Federal Building
Sep 8 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

TAKE ACTION

Tell Congress and the White House:

Keep the Ban on Crude Oil Exports

& Stop Exports of All Fossil Fuels

Protect Our Climate, Health and Environment!

No More Fracking or Tar Sands Mining!

No More Crude Oil Rail Shipments Through Our Communities!

Stop the Utah – Oakland Coaal Export Scheme!

Support Renewable Energy!

Bring Signs!

The Oil Industry is currently working with their friends in Congress in an effort to lift the decades-old ban on shipping crude oil abroad.

In late July, the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee – chaired by Senator Murkowwski of Alaska – approved the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015 that includes a dangerous measure to lift the decades-old crude oil export ban.

Exporting crude oil will encourage even more fracking and tar sands mining, causing increased health, environmental and climate problems in the US and abroad.

To protect health, the environment and stop climate change, we need to keep the crude oil export ban in place, stop fracking and tar sands mining, build the campaign to keep dirty oil and other fossil fuels in the ground, and support renewable energy.

PICKET WHOLE FOODS! STOP ANTI-BLACK VIOLENCE!! @ Whole Foods Oakland
Sep 10 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

On Thursday Sept. 4th a Black man who was attempting to make a purchase with his EBT, was beaten and bloodied by armed security guards at the Lake Merritt Whole Foods. This man was left unconscious in a large pool of his own blood out front of the store, while employees called for more back-up rather than sending for paramedics.

This inhumane beating adds to the national narrative around a crisis of anti-Black violence. Currently, every 28hrs a black person is murdered by police, vigilantes, or security guards.*

This latest brutality is also in context of many ongoing discriminatory practices and anti-Black policies engaged by Whole Foods:

**Whole Foods materially supported the state violence in Baltimore**
During the Baltimore protests, Whole Foods distributed free water bottles to the National Guard and created a photo opportunity, rather than providing any food/water donations to the Baltimore children left hungry by the forced school closures.

**Whole Foods depends on Prison Labor**
WF uses exploitative prison labor in Colorado to supply products to their stores nationally.

*Whole Foods has a poor labor record**
WF is known for their union-busting and anti-worker labor practices.

*Whole Foods was a significant gentrifying force in Oakland*
WF only opens locations in areas that meet their median income standards. The Lake Merritt location was an exception to this policy; in 2007 this store was opened based on a projected rise in income. Meaning WF both fostered and depended on the gentrification of this area in particular.

On Thursday Spet 10th, we are calling for a picket at Whole Foods with the following demands:

1. Disarm all security guards at the store
2. Compensate for the pain, suffering, and humiliation of the attack victim
3.Issue a public apology
4. Suspend all managers on duty that night, as well as the employees who called for more backup rather than calling the paramedics.
5. Provide discounts and giveaways for EBT customers, in solidarity with the working families being displaced from the area.
6. Require on-going staff training on how anti-Black racism functions within customer service

Please turn out with SIGNS and BANNERS for a two-hour picket line out front of the Whole Foods. This violence against our community has to stop!! And we will not support a business that promotes these acts of brutality!!

~This event is being hosted by members of black.seed and the Anti-Police Terror Project~

Stop Urban Shield! @ Alameda County Sheriff's Office
Sep 11 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Protest Alameda County Sheriff Ahern’s

militarized police exhibit and exercises

Stop Urban ShieldUrban Shield is the largest SWAT training & war-weapons expo in the world. We will gather on September 11th, across communities, to end it & resist police militarization around the world!

Join the Stop Urban Shield Coalition to say NO to policing, militarization and state violence!

While Urban Shield is just one front in the fight against the state’s attempt to militarize every aspect of our lives – from its war-making here and abroad, to the increasing presence of police in our schools, to the systemic murder of Black and Brown people at the hands of police – stopping Urban Shield would be a major victory against this growing trend of militarization in cities everywhere, from Oakland to Ferguson to Baltimore.

Join us in resisting violence against our communities and in fighting for genuine visions of justice, safety, and self-determination.

#FloodTheSystem

One year ago, thousands of us flooded Wall Street in New York, taking mass direct action in the heart of a global financial system that’s fueling the climate crisis.

Now, a year later, people across the continent are preparing and organizing for #FloodTheSystem, a continental uprising against the economic and political systems threatening our survival.

To kick off #FloodTheSystem, we’re going to Flood Wall Street West: San Francisco’s financial district. Flood Wall Street West will consist of a tour of shame of some of the worst corporate and political bad actors in San Francisco’s financial district. We will take mass direct action to shut down business as usual and highlight the connections between the climate crisis, capitalism, exploitation and oppression.

Come dressed in blue. We’ll have everything else you need, including chant sheets, banners, signs, props and art.

This is direct action for everybody. While many of us will risk arrest, everyone can participate safely, whether or not you’re willing to go to jail. We will lead a legal briefing and nonviolent direct action training before the march to make sure that everyone is prepared to participate.

Nurses on the Picket Line @ Contra Costa Medical Center
Oct 6 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Please join nurses in their demand that Contra Costa County Supervisors invest in the health and wellbeing of  county residents.  This is a matter of life and death. Every budget cycle in the last few years Contra Costa County Supervisors have attempted to divest from the Contra Costa County Health System.  Last year 63,000 Contra Costa County residents visited the ER, and 100 nurses left the System, leaving short staffing.  Nurses are scrambling to provide appropriate patient care.

Please join the nurses on their picket line. Any time is fine, but they are particularly looking for community support at noon on both days.

CANCELLED: PROTEST PARTY BY THE LAKE: It’s No Longer Possible to Have Fun in Oakland @ Lake Merritt Amphitheatre, Btwn 12th St. & 1st Ave
Oct 10 @ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

APPARENTLY CANCELLED BY THE PERSON WHO ORIGINALLY CALLED FOR IT AND MADE THE FACEBOOK EVENT.

*THIS EVENT WILL NOT BE GETTING A PERMIT!*
RSVP

We have probably all seen the sign on Lakeshore advising us that barbecues, amplified music, beer, and fun in general are no longer allowed in the parks around the lake without a permit from the city.

Now the City has decided that musical instruments are also not allowed without prior acquisition of a permit.

What this means is that our public spaces are only truly accessible to those with the resources to procure permission to use them. What this also means is that Oakland residents who have used these community spaces as a shared yard, celebrating birthdays, weddings, graduations, and everything else in the heart of our beautiful city, can no longer continue to do so.

There is no doubt that these changes come as an attempt to make Oakland less hospitable to those who have lived here for years, and more welcoming to newcomers seeking to significantly alter the culture and landscape of the city. There is also no doubt that these regulations will be selectively enforced by the racist, classist Oakland Police Department and City Government.

It is time for our community to rise up and demand that our public spaces remain accessible for use by ALL of us.

In the interest of sending a loud and clear message, please bring your instruments, your grills, your stereos, your children, your dogs, your coolers full of beer, and your love for Oakland to the Lake Merritt Ampitheater Let’s celebrate Oakland’s history of resistance against state repression, and continue our city’s rich tradition of holding each other up in the face of adversity.

CALL TO ACTION: EMERGENCY PROTEST FOR PALESTINE!
Oct 15 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

We, the General Union of Palestine Students, declare Palestine in a state of emergency and urge all of our community organizers and leaders to come forth as we rise with the uprisings, as we rise with Palestine in front of the Israeli Consulate.
As you may have heard recently, the situation in Palestine has been deteriorating. Within the past few weeks, Zionist forces have shut down Al-Aqsa and Al-Aqsa compound, forbidding all Palestinian and Muslim worshippers from their homes of prayer and restricting their rights to practice their religion in safety. Hundreds of Zionist settlers have stormed into Al-Aqsa, plunging Jerusalem and the greater West Bank into chaos. Zionist forces continue to violate and damage Al-Aqsa by burning down doors, setting fire to the rugs, and breaking the glass windows, flexing their control in complete provocation against Palestinians…leading to the murder of four Palestinian youth within the past few days and over 200 injured by snipers, rubber bullets, and gas inhalation. Our people of Palestine are frustrated, enraged, and resisting these constant acts of terror throughout the country. From Ramallah, to Nablus, to Jenin, and Al-Khalil, the Palestinian people are rising against the oppressive Zionist regime and defending Jerusalem. Along with the murder of our youth, Zionist forces have also demanded the demolition of their family homes in Ramallah, Surda and Nablus. Palestinian men and women have been surrounding each and every city day and night to protect the homes of their fellow people and to protect their cities from Zionist invasion.

We stand together in support of the Palestinian resistance against the oppressive Zionist regime and ask you all to stand with us. We need to stand united in front of the face of settler colonialism and echo the rage of our Palestinian people!

Flags, posters, and noise are encouraged.

Down With Geese! Protest Party at Lake Merritt @ Lake Merritt Amphitheater
Oct 17 @ 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm

We’ve all seen the hordes of Canadian geese around the lake. They are an invasive, non-native species that have taken up residence, are shitting all over everything, and are depriving local wildlife of resources.

The City has installed a bird sanctuary on the west side of the Lake, but it is not sufficient to make up for the displacement of the indigenous bird population by the relative newcomers, the Canadian geese, especially since several Canadian geese have taken up residence in and around the housing previously designated for native species.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! It’s time to show those geese who’s boss! Bring your grills, your dogs, your stereos, your instruments, and your children! Let’s make sure those geese know the Lake is for the Town, not for foul-tempered fowl.

We will not be seeking a permit from the City; we are uninterested in the platitudes they give us with one hand to quash our dissent, while they use the other hand to build more and more open spaces for the geese to use at the expense of the wildlife who existed here prior to the geese’ arrival.

Picket KFC: Demand Labor Organizer Shonda Be UnFired @ Kentucky Fried Chicken
Oct 18 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Shonda, a member of the Oakland Livable Wage Assembly and otherwise cool labor organizer was
fired Saturday from the KFC at 28th & Telegraph in Oakland.

People shut down the KFC for many hours on Saturday with a picket and will continue the action today (Sunday).

A statement from EBOC about Shonda and the action:

Shonda Roberts, a dedicated original member of EBOC (for over 2 years) was unjustly terminated yesterday afternoon. She has an impeccable track record in her former place of employment, KFC/Pizza Hut on 2800 Telegraph Ave, with 0 write-ups and many loyal customers who consistently go back to the store just to see her. For over 3 years, Shonda has been the best employee in the store, she is experienced, hard working and most of all, her energy is illuminating.

EBOC has always been a union and our strength comes from people power, especially because of AMAZING support from community and labor partners. Shonda’s activism reflects the best of Oakland, we cannot let this injustice stand. Yesterday, EBOC with support of our partners held a 7 hour direct action where we demanded Shonda’s job back. With the help of OPD, KFC/Pizza Hut attempted to stop our efforts, to no avail. Today at noon we are going back because that is Shonda’s next scheduled shift. Please join us there, and send to your networks, the bigger the turn out, the better.
