Literacy-inclusive reading group planning meeting @ The Holdout
Jan 15 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

We’ll organize a radical reading group that will be inclusive to folks of all reading levels: constant readers, infrequent readers, those with minimal literacy skills, people who wanna understand the book but kind of don’t think they can do it on their own. That group will kick off on Jan. 29, on our move-in weekend. This meeting is a planning event to pick some essential reads to start off and plan other details for the reading group.

#J15 *Global Day of Solidarity* MLK Candelight Vigil @ 19th n Telegraph Lot
Jan 15 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

On his birthday and in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision for racial and economic equality, peace, and non-violence, we are holding candlelight vigils to unite our world in a global movement for systemic change.

Wherever we may be, whether in our homes, in city squares, online, Occupies, or at work, we lift a beautiful message high above the political dialogue. We light the dream of a more equitable world in our hearts. We can overcome!

Dr. King said “A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and say: ‘This is not just.’ ”

Vigils are being organized around the world — from California to Cairo, New York to New Orleans, Germany to Nova Scotia. Pete Seeger, K’naan, Ramy Essam, Sol Guy, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Russell Simmons and many more have committed their support.

We gather to empower a great and global dream, a dream we have all dreamt of for thousands of years. We will sing, because freedom songs are the soul of the movement.. Together, we will make the dream a reality.

The Local action:
We, the Womyn and GURRLS Caucus of Ocupy Oakland invite you to step into and mediate upon the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

You are welcome to bring your favorite reading from Dr, King to share!
There will be an opportunity for all to speak – all are welcome!

*Please bring tee lights, and open hearts!

Occupy Patriarchy Meeting
Jan 19 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

We are still a group in progress so don’t be intimidated, its not too late to come check it out!

Email us at Oaklandoccupypatriarchy@gmail.com for the location!

Our beginning forum discussion will be:

Why do you think that we need a seperate organizing space for Women, Trans and Queer people only?

We will also be discussing “point of unity” number two:

Women, Trans people, Queers, Fags, Dykes, need a space that is OURS because we are marginalized, harassed, and attacked in other spaces all the time. We do not all have the same needs and desires, and our relationships with one another are structured by the intensified oppression of people of color, trans people and poor folks. However we think that we can sup- port and increase our power by working with each other.

Hope to see you there!
