SURJ Bay Area’s Queer and Trans (QT) Committee is hosting a free screening of I Am Not Your Negro, a film based on the work of James Baldwin that dives deep into white supremacy and resistance.  This will be the eve of APTP’s 96 hours of Direct Action to Reclaim King’s Radical Legacy. Members of the QT Committee will encourage attendees to participate in actions January 12-15th, including the mass march on Monday, January 15th.

“Master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, Remember This House. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.”

The Sierra Club is located at 2101 Webster Street between 21st and 22nd Street in Oakland. The Sierra Club Offices are on the 13th floor. There is a bank of elevators that go to the 12th floor and above.

Parking and Transportation: The closest BART station is 19th Street BART and the Sierra Club is 4 blocks from BART. If you come by Bart, head north on Broadway and then east (right) on 21st Street and left on Webster to the Building entrance. There will be a greeter in the lobby until 7:15, but please arrive well before 7 pm so we can begin promptly. If you are driving, please try to carpool and arrive early to leave time to find a spot.

Getting Into the Lobby: The doors for the Sierra Club building lock right at 7pm, so please do your best to arrive prior to 7pm. We will have someone stationed at the Webster entrance to the building until 7:15 for late arrivals. If you arrive after 7pm, please use the Webster entrance.

Building Accessibility: There are two entrances to Sierra Club Office building on Webster and 21st both of which are accessible for mobility devices. The building has an elevator, and the kitchen space, conference room, and restrooms can also all accommodate mobility devices.

Scents: The Sierra Club’s space endeavors to offer a scent free environment; however as the Club is currently transitioning towards the use of only scent free products, we cannot guarantee an entirely scent free space. We ask everyone to please arrive at meetings fragrance free to support access for folks who experience multiple chemical sensitivities and allergies. This means using only body products and laundry detergent that say “fragrance free” or “unscented” on the label and do not have scented ingredients.

Restrooms: Restrooms are currently labeled in a gender-binary way. The Sierra Club is working on changing this and has an office policy that all restrooms are available to anyone, regardless of lived or perceived gender identity. We ask that folks choose the restroom that is right for them, and that no one question a person’s chosen restroom.

SURJ Bay Area will be kicking off its participation in the #96Hours to Reclaim King’s Radical Legacy with a morning rally and human billboard at Rockridge BART.

We’ll be holding up signs and passing out flyers to morning commuters that focus on the theme of the day – state-sponsored violence – by highlighting alternatives to calling police, including BART police, as well as looking at their role in upholding white supremacy.

We’ll also be inviting people to come out for the 4th Annual March to Reclaim King’s Radical Legacy on Monday, January 15th.

Green Sunday (1/14):  Meet Our Candidates: for Governor of California and Mayor of Oakland

 

January’s Green Sunday will be your opportunity to meet two of our Party’s candidates in the 2018 election.  Josh Jones is seeking our Party’s endorsement for governor.  He has a scientific background in geology and hydrology and lives in Davis.  In 2016, he was an active supporter of Bernie Sanders and a leader of his campaign in Yolo County.  In 2017 he returned to the Green Party, tired of the behavior of the “regular”  Democrats.  Hopefully he can bring other Berniecrats to our Party.  For more information, please see his website:  http://josh4gov.org

Our second speaker is Saied Karamooz, who is running for Mayor of Oakland.  Saied has been involved in a number of progressive campaigns over the years.  Most notably, he has been serving as an active member of the Coalition for Police Accountability that spearheaded Measure LL, resulting in the establishment of a Police Commission in Oakland.  Currently he is a commissioner on Oakland’s Privacy Advisory Commission and President of the Jack London Improvement District.  Over the past few years, Saied has supported initiatives such as the Fight for 15, Stop Urban Shield, the Public Bank of Oakland, and No Coal in Oakland.  Saied’s campaign website (everyonesmayor.org) provides a clear outline of how to make Oakland an equitable city for all.

We may have some additional candidates present.  We will also have time for questions and comments from the audience.

Defend TPS! Rally for Salvadorans & Central Americans!

As many of you know from press coverage in the East Bay Express and elsewhere, the coal trial begins this coming Tuesday, Jan 16th in the case that local developer Phil Tagami and his coal industry backers have brought against the City of Oakland.

No Coal in Oakland asks its supporters to attend the trial, even if only for a single day or a few hours. It is important for the court to see our community’s grave concern about the proposed coal terminal’s threat to health, safety, and the environment.

At issue in the trial will be whether the Oakland City Council was presented with substantial evidence of a danger to public health and safety before it voted in 2016 to ban coal storage and handling in Oakland. Constitutional issues raised by Tagami’s lawyers — asserting that the City of Oakland’s jurisdiction over the proposed coal terminal is preempted by federal law — will be considered only if and only after the judge finds that there was indeed the substantial evidence required to authorize the City to ban coal under the terms of its contract with Tagami.

When you come to court, please wear a red No Coal in Oakland t-shirt if you have one; otherwise, any red shirt will signal to the court where you stand. Dozens wore NCIO t-shirts at this past week’s hearing, so Judge Vince Chhabria and the attorneys on both sides recognized how seriously Oakland is taking the decisions before the court.

Any changes to the trial schedule will be posted on the No Coal in Oakland Events Calendar — judges sometimes need to juggle their calendars, so please check for updates before heading to San Francisco! We intend to update the Events Calendar by 5pm the day before any court date for which there is a change or cancelation, but if you check after 8pm you are virtually certain to see any new information.

Location: Philip Burton Federal Building / 450 Golden Gate Avenue (between Larkin and Polk) / San Francisco. The closest BART station is Civic Center. To enter the building you will need to go through a metal detector (airport style security, no boarding pass required). The trial will take place in Judge Chhabria’s courtroom on the 17th floor.

No Coal in Oakland encourages all supporters to respect courtroom decorum: our red shirts will convey our message clearly. Cell phones that go off during the hearing may be confiscated.  To get into the courthouse, you need to bring government-issued picture ID.

While AC transit and the City of Oakland Take HUGE payments from Corporate Transportation Agencies to Gentrify Oakland residents out of Oakland. At this press conference poor, unhoused and working class Youth and families residents of East Oakland will release their extensive “WeSearch” (Poor people-led research coined by POOR Magazine) on the funding sources, cover-up and gentriFUkation plans of this new Transportation Gentrification hitting Deep East Oakland.

NOTE:
In addition to covering up the backroom deals made with the City – the City denied access to documents requested by youth skolaz at Deecolonize Academy who filed over 14 Freedom of Information Act Requests from the city.

At this press conference we will be making a formal demand to the City and County of Oakland and AC transit to pay into a Community Reparations Fund to keep Oakland residents in Oakland while they try to build transportation lines about us without us.
